About Ellen
I have a B.S. in Biology, and a second B.S. in Chemistry. I did a medical technology internship and worked in hospital labs for three years. This really helped me understand the biology of the human body. I have four years of graduate science classes and have been a contributing author to two research papers. I switched gears when I realized that teaching and writing about science was more my passion than lab research. I earned an M.S. in Technical Communication, which helped me write better, but also taught me how people read, write and learn. I then went on to teach Chemistry in community college, and realized that teaching well was very important to me. To this end, I enrolled in a program for getting a teacher's license at the University of Northern Colorado. I originally specialized in middle school, but did most of my teaching in high school. I really enjoy the personalities of middle schoolers, but enjoy the more complex subjects that high schoolers can delve into. I have over 200 semester credits in science, and am still learning. I am a licensed middle school and high school science teacher who has also taught community college. I listen to you to find out what the problem is to bring you to tutoring. I will set you at ease, and tell you interesting things to feed your curiosity. For subjects based in math, I start with the basic concept, and let you master it. If necessary, we refresh the algebra needed to succeed. I explain concepts in multiple ways, using analogies, explaining how to eyeball equations, and make estimates to see if we are on track. You will come to understand the relationship between variables and see the story represented by an equation. I teach problem-solving skills that you can use for the rest of your academic career. For non-mathematical subjects, like cellular respiration, I teach you the overall picture first, then add details that fit into the picture. I use analogies and create word pictures for you. I monitor your progress by asking you questions and directing your answers to the solution. All my tutoring sessions are lively because I am so passionate about the subject. You will feel like you've been exercising mentally when we are finished for the day.
