About Thomas
I was educated at Stowe School where I won the McElwee Travel Award for my extended essay on Ukraine's transition from founding member of the Soviet Union to an independent state. I used the resulting grant to fund a ten day trip to Kiev to explore this theme. I spent my gap year working as a teaching assistant at Regent's International School Pattaya, a British curriculum boarding school in Thailand. My role involved aiding students across a range of subjects, including English and Maths, through Key Stages 1 to 3 and GCSE. I also assisted with the IB Theory of Knowledge course. This experience inspired me to pursue a career in education. I went on to read Philosophy and Religion at the University of Sheffield where I graduated with an Upper Second-Class Honours. Following university, I obtained an Erasmus grant to train as an EFL Teacher at a language school in Spain. During my time in Spain I have taught at a private language school and a local high school. In addition, I worked as a Teacher Coordinator at a top language camp last summer. More recently, I have been focused on assisting IB students with their TOK assignments and 11+/pretest exam candidates. In terms of my approach to teaching, I always seek to build a friendly rapport and highly supportive environment in class from the outset. Whenever a student encounters difficulties or feels overwhelmed, I ensure that they feel encouraged and able to succeed. I feel it is vital that tutorial programmes are designed to be as personalised and inspirational to the learner as possible. For this reason, I incorporate the tutee’s interests and aspirations into the lessons whenever relevant to the learning content. My main passions are music, travelling and skiing. I was Thomas Mathews’ manager at Tic Tac Talk from 2015-2017.
Thomas worked with me for a period of two during which he had to Carry out duties such as preparing and giving classes and giving me feedback on students’ progress.
His role involved teaching children and adults and he was also responsible for preparing students to take Cambridge exams.
He demonstrated great willingness to show initiative and as a consequence was able to work independently. He formed an integral part of our team at Tic Tac Talk and I wouldn’t hesitate to employ him again.Sept '17 Cambridge CELTA course - Thomas worked very hard and participated well throughout the course. He got on well with his students and the other trainee teachers. Thomas’s approach was professional in terms of preparation of materials, lesson planning, dealing with language & dealing with language skills work. Classroom management was becoming stronger by the end of the course. Thomas was fairly aware of the strengths and weaknesses in his teaching and was willing to try out new ideas and techniques. He contributed to input sessions and offered constructive criticism during group feedback. His written work was of a good standard.
