About Areej
I bring a passion for early childhood development and teaching to help children build confidence and find their own unique voice. For the past 6 years, I have been teaching children from 5 - 12 years of age various life skills courses and how to speak confidently. Previously, for over 15 years, I have worked in the public and social services sector, as well as serving consulting and advisory roles. I have dedicated my career to improving the lives of children, and engaging children and youth in public discourse and civic participation. For several years I managed and grew a scholarship programme for youth facing financial barriers to pursuing higher education. After working in local politics for former Councillor Adam Vaughan in a busy downtown ward I most recently held a management role at a large United Way Greater Toronto an international charity, overseeing the funding of early learning and development programmes for children and youth, mental health services, and food security services. Over the years, I have developed a particular passion for public speaking. I had a major fear of speaking through University, grad school, and professionally. I had to find the tools to get over my fear and improve my public speaking. Through this journey I became really fascinated with the art of public speaking. I did a lot of research into the topic and explored models of public speaking competence and key elements of speaking effectively. For inspiration and learning, I enjoy watching TED talks, speeches, and examining the different styles that presenters bring to their stories and on the stage. I love to bring all of the things that I learn into my own teaching. I recently studied Voice for Performance at the Central School of Speech and Drama and hold a BA in Philosophy and MA in Public Policy and Administration. My teaching and mentoring style is always done with patience, humour and providing the space and opportunity to find one’s own voice.

Is your child shy and finds it difficult to speak to new people, or finds public speaking in general difficult? I have designed a 6 session course with children in mind. The concept is simple - build a child’s confidence through self-awareness, voice work, and practice until speaking and assertive communication becomes more second nature. This will naturally build greater competence in public speaking. My sessions are geared towards children by providing simple but essential tools for speaking with confidence, then facilitates opportunities for children to practice speaking in a no pressure, positive and encouraging environment. My holistic approach is set apart from others as it focuses on breath work, voice work, mindfulness and drawing inspiration from other great speakers. They will learn to find their own unique voice and speak with confidence. This will better prepare them for school, giving presentations, interviewing through a competitive process, as well as in social settings. This will help them build their confidence and make speaking, about themselves or about a certain topic, more natural. I am a DBS certified educator and recently taught for a highly renowned life skills programme for kids. I have an MA in Public Policy and Administration, and completed a voice training course at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. I currently teach ages 5-12. Each lesson is 60 minutes.
