About Mariko

As an international educator, I bring over 18 years of experience teaching both primary and secondary students. In terms of leadership, I have been Head Teacher, Year Group Coordinator/Grade Team Leader, also teaching IB MYP Humanities. I was named Employee of the Year for the 2017-18 school year. Being that students come from different backgrounds and walks of life, I believe it is crucial to find the common ground that narrows the gaps between them. As an IB educator, I focus on conceptual instruction, and work to align the Approaches to Learning to both formative and summative assessments always with the IB Learner Profile in mind. As a teacher and school leader, the role of developing the whole child is very important to me. I believe that education is holistic; I am not only teaching students in a classroom setting, but I am also developing young adults who will need a variety of skill sets in order to become successful beyond their school life. Whether I am in or out of the classroom, I also believe developing a positive rapport with students is crucial in helping them be successful in all that they work to achieve. I take the same approach with both my colleagues as well as with parents.

I would be an excellent tutor because of my wide range of skills and experience. I have taught ESL/ELL, English literature, Humanities/Social Studies, and have also led Week Without Walls trips, coached both Middle School as well as Varsity soccer and Cross Country. I have facilitated athletic events, and charity fundraisers. I have also supervised both MYP Personal Project students, as well as DP Extended Essay students, developed a Social Emotional Learning scope and sequence for homeroom classes, and have coordinated several end of year class trips for a variety of year groups. Overall, I have loads of experience working with students both in and out of the classroom.

In the classroom, I look to provide consistent and timely feedback to students, scaffold my instruction through backwards planning of my units and assessments, and implement best practice in all of my lessons. I reflect on my own instruction by measuring how well the students are learning. I do this with a variation of assessments, whole group and small group discussions, pretesting/post-testing, surveys, and exit tickets. I am also adept at using Google docs/slides/forms/classroom, and sheets.

Welcome to Mrs. Bliss' Social Studies Classroom!

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
I am excited to embark on this educational journey with you, where history comes alive and the world's complexities unfold before our eyes. Here's a glimpse into what you can expect from our time together:

Teaching Method and Techniques:

In my classroom, learning is an active and immersive experience. I believe in the power of storytelling, interactive discussions, and hands-on activities to ignite curiosity, inquiry and deepen understanding. From lively debates to thought-provoking simulations, every lesson is designed to engage your minds and spark critical thinking.

️ A Typical Lesson Plan:

Each session will take you on a journey through time, blending historical narratives with modern contexts. We'll explore primary sources, analyze maps, and even incorporate multimedia resources for a well-rounded perspective. Our goal is not just to memorize facts, but to understand the underlying forces that have shaped societies across centuries.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:

What distinguishes my approach is a deep commitment to personal growth and tailored instruction. I understand that every student brings their own unique strengths and learning styles to the table. By recognizing and nurturing these individual qualities, I strive to create an environment where everyone can thrive and excel.

Who the Lessons Are For:

My lessons are mostly designed for Middle and High School (Grades 6-10). Whether you're a high school sophomore delving into world history or a college student dissecting political ideologies, you'll find value in our explorations. I also have nine years of experience working within the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework.

Together, we'll uncover the stories of civilizations, dissect the intricacies of geopolitics, and develop a deeper understanding of our global community.

I look forward to connecting with you!
