  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My love for English Literature and Language ignited during my undergraduate years at Bath Spa University, where creative writing and literary analysis captivated me. Private tutoring became a calling later when I realised how impactful one-to-one interactions could be. Seeing students grasp challenging concepts and grow in confidence became deeply rewarding, motivating me to pursue tutoring as a means of fostering academic growth and self-assurance.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English Literature and Language at various levels, from foundational grammar to advanced literary analysis. My favourite topics include discussing the transformative power of storytelling, exploring themes in contemporary literature, and helping students craft compelling essays. While I embrace every topic with enthusiasm, overly prescriptive grammar rules can sometimes feel limiting, yet I ensure my students understand their importance in effective communication.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Absolutely! During my studies, one of my professors at Birkbeck University left an indelible mark on me. Their passion for literature and ability to connect the written word to cultural and personal relevance inspired me to emulate the same enthusiasm in my teaching. They showed me how a great teacher could make even the most challenging texts accessible and exciting.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor must exhibit patience, empathy, and adaptability. Patience allows you to meet students at their current level, while empathy helps in understanding their struggles and motivations. Adaptability ensures that you tailor your approach to suit each student's unique learning style. Most importantly, a great tutor builds confidence, showing students that their potential is limitless with the right guidance.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my most memorable experiences was guiding a student who had struggled with English and doubted their abilities. Through consistent encouragement and tailored lessons, they not only passed their GCSEs but exceeded their predicted grades. Watching them walk into the exam room with newfound confidence was one of the most fulfilling moments of my career.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

The challenge often lies in breaking down the misconception that English is overly subjective or daunting. Many students feel overwhelmed by interpreting texts or expressing their thoughts. My approach focuses on simplifying these processes, making literature an exploration rather than a chore.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of the subject, or something completely different?

Teaching is my true passion, especially the moment when a student lights up with understanding. Beyond teaching, I am deeply passionate about the transformative power of storytelling. Literature offers a lens through which we can understand ourselves and others, and sharing this perspective with students is incredibly fulfilling.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof?

My ability to combine patience with passion makes me a Superprof. I don't just teach; I inspire. Every lesson is a journey where I not only help students excel academically but also cultivate self-confidence that extends beyond the classroom. My students' success is my greatest achievement, and I am committed to guiding them every step of the way.
