About Alison
With a passion for English, I believe progress in this area helps improve understanding and achievement across the curriculum and in life; literacy and communication skills can help as to achieve successful relationships, studies and careers.
I began my career in the classroom as a SEN TA, having achieved a degree in English & Creative Writing. I then qualified as an English Teacher 'on the job' following time spent as a literacy co-ordinator and HLTA. Since then, I have taught in mainstream secondary school and have been a successful senior leader in an Alternative Provision and, latterly, a special school where I held the posts of Teaching & Learning Manager and Deputy Head.

The initial tutoring session will consist of some time spent ensuring the student feels comfortable with me, and talking about strengths, areas they'd like to improve and what they would like to get from sessions. I also like to find out about any hobbies and interests they have so that lessons can incorporate these themes where possible. There will also be an assessment to identify learning priorities. Any individual needs can also be discussed at this point.
Sessions are typically 60 minutes long but this can be altered to suit the student. They will be chunked to provide pace and encourage engagement. Students will be expected to recall some prior learning and new skills and concepts will then be delivered, modelled and applied with consolidation exercises to provide practice and secure learning.
A brief report will be provided following each session following our initial assessment. A longer report can then be issued at regular periods if required.
If required, I can also support with reading practice, homework provided by school and exam revision.
