About Malcolm

I started my math career as a student who couldn’t memorize to save my life - so in order to pass my math classes, I made myself learn what was actually going on behind the scenes, what everything meant and why it mattered. Soon I was at the top of my class and started helping my friends see how it all worked too. From there, I started working as a tutor and eventually, started teaching in classrooms myself!

I missed being a student though, so I’m going to graduate school to learn EVEN MORE math (in grad school they let you do the cool creative stuff, but actually you ca do creative math at any level! I’m happy to share the cool method with you). I also missed tutoring people one-on-one, so that’s what I’m doing now!

I bring a lot of joy and excitement to math, and my students find it pretty contagious! I’m also queer and neurodivergent (my brain works differently than some other people) and I am always flexible and happy to change how I work with you so that you can learn more easily and feel better!

I love to learn the interests of my students, and show them howthose interests connect to the material we’re working on. I love all sorts of hobbies too, like baking, sewing, singing and game design, so talk to me about your hobbies! Excitement is one of the most powerful mathematical tools we have - let’s get excited!

I specialize in a few areas:
1. Helping students who feel “bad at math” find and fill in the gaps in their knowledge and start to feel “good at math”!

2. Helping students of all skill levels learn to approach math as a creative and exciting activity, learn the secrets math teachers never tell you, and the fascinating history of mathematics itself and why schools accidentally ruined it (plus, how we can un-ruin it for ourselves).

3. Adapting my teaching style to fit the individual needs of each student.

In a lesson, I start by asking you to explain what you know about a topic to me. Once we find a piece you don’t know how to explain, we start there. I am extremely flexible in my teaching methods, tailoring my approach to what is working for you - we can talk through big ideas out loud, I can give you brain teasers and interesting questions to answer, or we can sit down with one of your school assignments or other material and work through the problems together! Whatever way you learn best and feel most comfortable is fine by me.

In any case, my focus is always on developing a deep understanding of the ideas involved in whatever topic we are working on. Contrary to popular belief, math should always make sense! Once it does make sense, we move on to putting those ideas into practice and seeing some examples of ways we can build off that knowledge.

I am a source of lots of fun facts, weird true stories, and cool uses for the topics I teach! Learn about how we discovered black holes in math before we found them in space, how ants can measure the size of a nest just by running around bumping into each other, or why Pythagoras wouldn’t recognize the Pythagorean Theorem if he walked into a classroom teaching it today. Also learn why Pythagoras possibly committed murder! (It has a lot to do with fractions, oddly enough.)

I really love math, and though school does its best to make us all hate it, I want to show you why you should love it too! Side effects may include increased confidence, excitement at solving a tough problem, and correcting your math teacher. Oh, and math class will be a breeze.
