About Christopher
I teach professionally at the university level. I am currently a professor at Wesleyan University, and I have also taught at University of New Hampshire and New York University. At NYU in addition to teaching art history and gender studies, I also ran an MA student thesis writing workshop. I have over five years of undergraduate teaching experience, and I will teach graduate students in art history for the first time this fall.
Prior to beginning graduate work, I also worked professionally in museums. My last position was at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston where I served as the Collections Cataloguer. So, I have professional art historical experience beyond the academy. In fact, I currently work part time for a contemporary art magazine (The Brooklyn Rail), which puts me in regular contact with gallerists and working queer artists.
My own academic work has been recognized through numerous grants and awards. I have been a fellow with the Institute of Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art; Rare Book School, University of Virginia, and the Georges Lurcy Educational and Charitable Trust. I have presented research across the globe at the Association for Art History, International Congress on Medieval Studies, and Cambridge University's Online Seminar in Medieval French, among other venues.
Beyond these experiences, I worked as a camp counselor for a decade and the director of a summer camp for two years. I bring these last experiences up because I try to bring the same enthusiasm and care to my academic teaching as I did as a counselor. Among other things, I taught fishing, sailing, basket weaving, and an activity based on the Harry Potter books.

Teaching is my favorite part of being an academic, and I am very passionate about it. I believe that art history education is of great importance today. Fact is, few of us read long texts very much these days, but we all look at oodles of pictures: on social media, on the news, in ads. They're everywhere! And yet, few of us receive any training in how to critically read pictures.
I view training you in close looking, formal analysis, and critical viewership to be my foremost responsibilities to you. These skills are ones you can take with you beyond art history class. In order to accomplish this goal, we will of course study the history of art. A working knowledge of historical artworks will make your own visual world far more meaningful and also allow you to tools to critique it.
I am excited to work with you!
