About Selma
I am a highly experienced English specialist with over 25 years of teaching at a prestigious international secondary school and at university level. I hold a PhD in English Literature and specialise in helping students achieve top grades in GCSE, IGCSE, and A-Level English.
Students choose me for my supportive and personalised approach, where clear guidance and encouragement help them build confidence and achieve their academic goals. As a London-born British teacher and award-winning writer who has lectured and published both academic articles and fiction, I bring academic rigour and creativity to my lessons.
I also work with students aged 12 and above who are learning English as an additional language (EAL/ESL), supporting them in developing fluency, accuracy, and confidence, particularly in preparation for academic study in English.
In addition, I provide guidance for undergraduate and postgraduate students with essays, dissertations, and advanced academic writing.

My lessons are personalised, engaging, and carefully designed to meet the individual needs of each student. With a PhD in English Literature, a PGCE, a TEFL qualification, and over 25 years of teaching experience, I combine academic expertise with proven classroom practice to help learners achieve their full potential.
I adopt a student-centred approach, beginning with an initial assessment to identify strengths, areas for development, and specific academic goals. Lessons are then tailored to suit each learner’s level and learning style. My aim is not only to improve academic performance but also to build confidence, independence, and a genuine appreciation of the English language and literature.
I specialise in preparing students for GCSE, IGCSE, and A-Level English Language and Literature, focusing on developing strong analytical and essay-writing skills alongside effective exam techniques. I also work with students aged 12 and above who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL/ESL), supporting them in building fluency, grammatical accuracy, and the academic language skills required for success in English-medium education.
Teaching Methods Include:
• Close textual analysis to develop critical thinking and interpretation skills.
• Structured writing support to enhance clarity, coherence, and argumentation.
• Vocabulary and grammar development for accuracy and fluency.
• Exam-focused preparation for GCSE, IGCSE, and A-Level English.
• Interactive discussion and questioning to deepen understanding and engagement.
• Support for academic writing, including essays and dissertations at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Communicative language teaching techniques, informed by my TEFL qualification, to support EAL/ESL learners.
• Regular feedback and progress monitoring to ensure continuous improvement.

Ms. Selma was my IGCSE English Language teacher, and she played a significant role in my academic development. She consistently put in a great deal of effort to keep her students motivated and engaged, creating a positive and supportive learning environment in the classroom. Her dedication to teaching was evident in the time and care she invested in each of her students.
One of the most impactful aspects of her teaching was the individual attention she provided. She regularly gave me one-to-one feedback on my assignments, carefully explaining my strengths and pointing out areas for improvement in a constructive and encouraging manner. This personalized guidance helped me steadily build my language skills and gain confidence in my abilities.
Thanks to her support and effective teaching methods, I was able to achieve my target result in English. Ms. Selma is not only encouraging but also highly adaptable; she is able to modify her teaching approaches to suit the needs of each student, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Overall, she is an inspiring and dedicated teacher who genuinely cares about her students’ progress and success.Mrs. Karayalcin was my English teacher for many years, including during my GCSEs. She is a patient and supportive teacher who always encourages her students to do their best. Her lessons are engaging and easy to follow, and she explains even difficult topics clearly.
She is also very approachable and always willing to help when needed. Her communication skills, organization, and genuine care for her students make her an excellent teacher. I am confident she will continue to have as positive an impact on her future students as she had on me.Ms Karayalcin was my English teacher for a couple of years, during which time she prepared my class for the Cambridge IGCSE First Language English exam. With her guidance, I achieved the highest mark in Cyprus and was awarded the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award. There is no doubt that her teaching played a significant role in this result; Ms Karayalcin is one of the few teachers I’ve seen who genuinely cares about all her students. She always kept us motivated, giving us feedback and taking the time to help each of us improve. Her lessons were always engaging and a little different each day, which kept me interested, and I always felt comfortable participating, asking questions, and even making mistakes. I am very grateful to have been taught by her, and I’m confident that she will continue to have a positive impact on her students.
