About Gianluca

My courses are built around the premise that questions—not answers—are the foundation of learning in IR. Students gain knowledge of theories, concepts, and debates on ideas, governance, institutions, and the core interests of states—identity, development, stability, and security. Yet concepts and theories remain sterile unless paired with well-formulated questions.

In each of my courses I ask: What assumptions underpin an argument? What concepts structure an explanation? How do beliefs, norms, and identities shape institutions? How is knowledge constructed, used, and contested? Each week is organized around two to four guiding questions. This structure teaches students not what to think, but how to think—how to formulate hypotheses, interrogate evidence, and evaluate competing explanations. Most sessions begin with a short instructor introduction, but the analytical work is driven by student participation, text analysis, data interpretation, and structured debate.

I approach teaching as both an international relations scholar and an expert in foundational courses for social sciences and the humanities: while the analytical core of my approach lies in IR theory, international organizations, norms, and governance, I stress the importance of studying civilizational development, classical cultures and the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity.

Across two decades of teaching in Europe, East Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and South America—primarily in U.S.-style institutions—I have focused on empowering students to think critically, debate openly, and apply theoretical frameworks to complex global problems.
My philosophy has been shaped not only by extensive classroom experience, but also by serving as Department Chair at the American University of Kurdistan and previously at the American University of Iraq–Sulaimani, where I redesigned academic programs, aligned curricula with U.S.-accredited outcomes, supervised faculty, and strengthened advising and assessment systems. These experiences reinforced that effective teaching is inseparable from coherent program design: courses must link content, skills, assessment, objectives and student development.
I emphasize teaching that is interactive, rigorous, and conceptually grounded. In my classrooms, theory becomes an analytical tool, methods are a language of clarity, and writing is the vehicle through which students develop interpretive precision.

A particularly formative experience was teaching 50 Afghan evacuee students who fled Kabul in 2021. Many had experienced trauma, disruption, and unfamiliarity with standard technologies. I adapted by shifting to dialogue-centered seminars, trauma-informed approaches, and individualized mentoring. In both AUIS and AUK, I routinely teach classes composed of IDPs, refugees, and minority students, which has strengthened my commitment to inclusive, culturally responsive pedagogy that maintains high standards while meeting students where they are—academically and emotionally.
