About Gemma
Hello, I’m Dr Gemma and I'm a published novelist, poet, professional editor and qualified lecturer with a PhD in Creative & Critical Writing and a PGCE.
With over 20 years’ experience in the UK education system, I have worked across teaching, publishing and mentoring, helping students develop the academic skills and confidence needed to succeed at school and beyond.
Since 2013, my students have achieved a 100% pass rate, with many securing scholarships to leading institutions including UWC, Howell’s School and Cardiff Sixth Form College. I have also mentored a Foyle Young Poet of the Year.
Alongside tutoring, I work in the publishing industry as a professional editor which means students benefit from an expert 'editor’s eye' when developing essays, coursework and written assignments.
My background in education, publishing and professional writing allows me to support students not only with exams, but also with developing a confident academic voice and strong writing skills that will serve them throughout their studies and future careers.

My lessons are tailored to each student’s individual goals, VARK learning style and academic level. I begin by identifying the areas where a student needs the most support, whether that is essay structure, literary analysis, revision strategies or exam technique.
Lessons typically combine guided discussion, close reading of texts, and structured writing practice so that students develop both their understanding of literature and the ability to communicate their ideas clearly.
For exam students, we work closely with the current GCSE, A-Level or IB specifications, practising past questions and building the analytical skills required for high-level responses.
As a professional editor and published author, I also help students strengthen their writing voice and clarity. This is particularly valuable for coursework, essays, EPQs and personal statements, where careful argument and strong expression make a real difference.
I also provide supportive guidance for students with SEN or neurodiverse learning styles, using structured approaches that build confidence and independent study skills.
My aim is not simply to improve grades, but to help students become confident thinkers and writers who understand how to express their ideas effectively.

I met Gemma when studying for my A levels in 2025 and she helped so much!
I was studying English Literature and Gemma made this course so much more interesting, she always encouraged me to do my best and to keep gong when it was hard.
She not only provided me with advice for my English A levels but she was also a friend that I could talk to and she is so kind and listened to everything I said in all my sessions and every session was engaging and I learnt so much! She made studying fun and helped me to write my personal statement too! With this I was accepted to study Speech and Language in Cardiff Metropolitan.
I have Gemma to thank for so much and I am so appreciative for her!
She’s the best English tutor you could get! She is a powerful women!
