About Eva
Hello! I am Dr. Eva Graham, a university educator and researcher specializing in English literature, academic writing, philosophy, and sociology. I have a PhD in English from Simon Fraser University (2023) and a Master’s in philosophy from the University of Amsterdam. With nearly a decade of experience teaching at institutions like SFU, Yorkville University, and Langara College, I specialize in transforming complex academic concepts into clear, engaging lessons
I believe that great tutoring is about more than just correcting grammar; it is about building confidence. My approach is patient, structured, and entirely tailored to your goals. Whether you are preparing for a thesis defense, tackling a difficult literary text, or simply want to improve your academic writing, I am here to guide you with professionalism and care.
I am also currently completing an advanced TESOL certification, expanding support for spoken and written English (ESL).
Creating a safe and inclusive environment is a top priority for me, and I particularly welcome learners from LGBTQ+ backgrounds.

My approach is grounded in critical pedagogy—starting every session by understanding your specific goals, current skill level, and preferred learning style. I draw from:
- Close reading and textual analysis for literature and theory courses.
- Writing instruction (thesis development, argumentation, citation, revision).
- Interdisciplinary connections linking philosophy, sociology, and cultural studies.
- Multimodal materials (film, podcasts, visual art alongside traditional texts).
- Active discussion and Socratic questioning to develop independent critical thinking.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
- Check-in (5–10 min): Review previous material, clarify objectives for today.
- Core Concept/Text (20–30 min): Guided analysis with contextual framing.
- Applied Practice (15–25 min): Writing exercises, discussion prompts, or problem-solving.
- Feedback & Next Steps (10 min): Actionable takeaways and homework if applicable.
Lessons are flexible—I adjust pacing based on your engagement and comprehension.
What Sets Me Apart:
- PhD in English (Simon Fraser University, 2023) with published research in peer-reviewed journals (Historical Materialism, CLC Web).
- Dual expertise in English and Philosophy (MA from University of Amsterdam).
- 8+ years teaching experience across universities (SFU, Yorkville, Langara) with courses ranging from first-year surveys to upper-division critical theory seminars.
- Currently completing advanced TESOL certification, expanding support for spoken and written English.
Who the Lessons Are For:
- Undergraduate students (first-year to upper-division) needing support with essays, close reading, or theory-heavy courses.
- Graduate students working on thesis/dissertation writing or comprehensive exam preparation.
- Adult learners seeking to strengthen academic writing or explore philosophy/sociology independently.
- International students preparing for English-medium university coursework
- Specific course support: Literary criticism, critical theory, cultural studies, queer/trans studies, political economy, and interdisciplinary humanities projects.
