About Janel
I was born and raised in Japan where I first developed an interest in learning about diverse people and cultures. I received a BA in intercultural studies from Biola University; MA in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) from Azusa Pacific University (APU); and Ph.D. in cross-cultural education from Biola University. I have served on the faculty of University of California-Irvine; Concordia University-Irvine; and Azusa Pacific University, teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in global studies, education, and English/communications. I have also served as an academic advisor and liaison to international students at APU. I am currently a professor in the first- and second-year seminar program at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Research Expertise
Intercultural engagement, linguistic acquisition and development, and course development for effective linguistic and cultural transition for international students on American college campuses.

I've taught traditional and non-traditional, English speaking and ESL students in all areas of university success including speaking, research and writing, discussion skills, designing life skills, etc. I also tutor for non-university students who need these skills.
