About Joseph
I have a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Berkeley. I taught at Notre Dame for eight years, Northwestern for one, Pitt for a year and a half. I published over 13 articles and a book with Cambridge University Press, and won a prestigious fellowship to conduct research in Germany. I still keep in touch with my former students and am looking forward to meeting new ones!

Philosophy is not a spectator sport. You can’t learn about it without doing it. Doing philosophy-and doing it well-is a matter of exegesis and argument. Before analyzing a position or argument you must first understand it deeply and charitably. Anyone can shoot down straw men, but it takes patience, care, and intellectual maturity to be able to charitably understand another’s position, especially if it’s one you disagree with. My lessons help train you to acquire this ability to unpack and understand lines of reasoning in the most sophisticated way. Once that has been done, you can proceed to analyze their strengths and weaknesses. I love using great historical philosophical texts for this purpose, texts that repay repeated reading, e.g. the Republic, Nicomachean Ethics, etc. I have taught these and other texts countless times, and new treasures constantly emerge. Get your brain shovel and start digging into them with me! In case you need help with writing I have ample experience with that as well. I taught writing intensive courses for over ten years. I have proven techniques that will help improve the clarity and efficiency of your writing.

Perfect! Over the course of a couple weeks before my final, James helped me work through and understand some very complex philosophical concepts. He always took time to read the text prior to our meetings; this allowed us to not waste any time. He has the unique ability to put difficult-to-understand concepts in easily accessible terms, often through contemporary examples. I found him very helpful towards my preparation for my final exam and I will not hesitate to reach out in the future.
