About Ben

I am a teacher from the Isle of Man, but more than willing to conduct lessons over software such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams. I fully understand the benefits of in-person teaching, thus, the online lessons would be at a reduced price in comparison to in-person lessons. I attended Bede's Senior School in Eastbourne, where I completed my A-Levels in physics, mathematics and biology. After school, I moved abroad to study physics at Fairfield University. I was also a student-athlete at this university as a member of the NCAA Division I swim team. I graduated in May 2021 with a 3.57 GPA and cum laude, Sigma Xi and Sigma Pi Sigma honours. After university, I spent a year working with Mirion Technologies in Connecticut, USA and have now recently returned to the UK to pursue another line of work. I came to realise that I did not fully enjoy sitting at a desk all day in a corporate job. Instead, I wanted to do something that I would thoroughly enjoy. As a people person, I thought that there would be nothing better than being a teacher. Next year I will be looking to complete my PGCE to become a full-time teacher, however, for this next year, I am looking to gain more experience as a teacher to improve my skills whilst helping students improve their understanding of physics in the process.

As a teacher, I believe it is vital that students are able to have an interactive lesson to understand the concept of the material. Knowing the details of the subject is good, however, it is the jump to understanding and applying the knowledge to problems that is the goal of my lessons. Personally, I have always felt that it is beneficial to understand why something is being taught, thus, it gives students a reason to understand the concepts. If a student does not understand the purpose of the material in a real-life situation, or where it will be beneficial in the "real world" then it becomes much more difficult to understand and apply the knowledge more effectively. Knowing this makes learning the subject much more enjoyable which is greatly beneficial to maintaining an understanding of the material, and increasing exam scores in the future. A typical lesson would never exceed 45 minutes as research has shown that the brain is most efficient during this time period, and any longer the student starts to become distracted more easily. Keeping this timeframe allows for the most beneficial learning experience and creates the most effective learning environment for the student. As a tutor, I am open to any level of physics up to A-Levels. My knowledge is greatest in this region, so it would mean that I am able to teach to my fullest ability.
