About Tomasz

I have over 10 years of experience in public performance, including working with chamber groups, playing on historic instruments, and performing concertos with orchestras. I have played in many high-profile venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, in Weil Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall in NYC, in the Chopin Museum in Warsaw, and in the Polish and German embassies in DC. Some of my charity projects include Christmas concerts in retirement homes, playing in the Songs for Sarcoma concert series, and organizing a New Year’s concert in Bydgoszcz in Poland.

I was born in the U.S., and have been a student of Dr. Eteri Andjaparidze and Dr. Anna Ouspenskaya. I’ve also had lessons and masterclasses with many other pianists, including Rafał Blechacz, Alexander Kobrin, Sofya Gulyak, Piotr Paleczny, and Krzysztof Jabłoński. I currently am continuing my studies in Bydgoszcz, Poland, with Profesor Ewa Pobłocka and Dr. Adam Kośmieja on the piano, and with Profesor Urszula Bartkiewicz and Dr. Dorota Zimna on the harpsichord.

I have been a laureate of many competitions, including first prize and audience prize a the 2018 Washington Steinway Piano Competition, Best Rachmaninov Performance of the Great Composers Competitions Series, and first prize at the NVMTA Robert Spencer Piano Concerto Competition.

My main goal is for my students to develop a strong classical piano technique and musical instinct, in order to become self sufficient in their playing.

The curriculum is based on the old Russian school of piano playing that I have been brought up in, modernized by new, historically informed approaches to baroque and classical period works. A tailored repertoire for each student both contains pieces that work with the student’s strengths as well as pieces chosen to solve any difficulties.

A strong focus is directed at the sound production ant the keyboard and the ability to project notes from the very beginning of piano study. Also important to my teaching is a knowledge of music theory, which I will include by analyzing each given piece with the student.

I am always open to repertoire requests from the student from any genre, but my assigned repertoire is taken from the standard classical piano repertoire from the Baroque period to modern times. Students at all levels will receive repertoire by the most important and influential composers, as well as lesser known works to develop an individual “good taste.” For students proficient at reading sheet music, every year I will assign at least one baroque work (not just J.S. Bach), one classical sonata, one 19th century work, one modern work, one concert etude, and one complete concerto. I will also spend some time on developing classical improvisation and ornamentation skills for interested students.

Lessons consist of the student showing what he or she has learned in between lessons, followed by going over the specific piece(s) fragment by fragment, teaching by both explaining verbally as well as through demonstrations.

Due to the online format and the limitations of internet sound, I will often ask for students to record their playing by themselves in between lessons, for me to listen and give advice. This also helps me see what a student considers his „best” work-all pianists know that it’s hardest to play live for your teacher.

I can teach students from a “zero” level with no experience, including students who cannot read sheet music. In such a case much of our time in the beginning will be spent on learning this musical language; however, at the same time I will give exercises which do not require note reading to develop finger strength and technique. I will also teach an understanding of both Basso Continuo and modern jazz notation, to give students a complete musical vocabulary.

I expect students to be able to practice at an instrument at least 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes, with more advanced students practicing a minimum of 2-3 hours a day.
