About Debbie

I have a 2:1 in Fine Art from Lancaster University and an A* in my Fine Art A-Level. I have a Level 3 Education and Training Award and have nearly completed a PGCE in further education and training.

I have a range of volunteering experience tutoring 11-19 year olds in art and while I have taught full classes I enjoy teaching small groups and 1:1 tutoring the most as I can help students progress rapidly through additional guidance. As a portrait specialist I can help students develop a strong eye for detail. Having achieved and A* in my Fine Art A-Level and having worked as a teacher of the qualification I have a strong understanding of how to achieve success in the course.

I firmly believe/know anyone can draw with the right knowledge, mindset and commitment. My strengths lie in the technical side of drawing - colour, tone, composition etc and I can really help students through sharing this knowledge. I have really enjoyed proving people who think they can’t draw wrong!

My lessons are highly focused but I also encourage students to enjoy what they are doing as I believe it's very hard to do well at something if you don't love what you do.

My background has been tutoring and teaching A-Level art students but I am happy to also help with GCSE’s. In my experience mentoring /teaching people either have perfectionist tendencies and can overwork or they take a bolder approach and can end up rushing their work.

Before teaching/tutoring, where possible, I would start by seeing examples of my students work to assess how they can best develop.

Typically students who aren’t achieving the grades they want tend to be less detail orientated. Approaches I would cover would focus on training the student to focus on exactly what they are seeing rather than what you think you see (such as upside down drawing and/or focusing drawing the negative space).

For a student who is producing a high quality of work but not enough work to achieve higher grades I would focus on techniques for developing drawing/painting speed. One approach I’ve developed is speed paintings so they set themselves times limits (e.g 1 hour, 2 hours etc) and can only spend this time on the work. I could also take students through 3 minute contour drawing exercises - ‘Blind’ drawing, non-dominant hand drawing and continuous line drawings help encourage a bolder approach and develop new techniques.

With any students I would be looking to teach new techniques (such a subtractive drawing - starting off with a graphite/charcoal grounds background and working into the drawing using an eraser then drawing back in with pencil etc - it’s a fast process with very successful results and is so much easier to teach through demonstrations than explain through written descriptions!) as experimentation is a good part of the marks on an A-Level.

(I can share examples of both my art and some student work - on request via email which conveys what I am able to teach much better than words can!)

Thanks,
Debbie
