About Rithwik

Hello, my name is Rithwik! I am a student at SAIT studying civil engineering technologies, and I have completed IB math and physics at John. G Diefenbaker High School. I am tutoring because teaching is one of the most satisfying things I can do. There is nothing more satisfying than helping someone solve a problem they have been struggling with for a while. I have found this is much easier to do with a person's academic problems compared to anything else. Naturally, tutoring is a very rewarding experience.

I tutor math, science, physics, and social studies for students in middle school and high school.
My lessons are guided by three principles: triage, effective communication, and self-motivation.

Triage: I focus my lessons to the issues that are holding the student back the most. Usually these are foundational concepts (concepts that are necessary to understand a subject)
For example, understanding what the sin, cos, and tan of right-angle triangles represent are foundational concepts for static and dynamic forces in physics. If, during our lessons, I find that my student is struggling with SOHCAHTOA during a force question, I will spend time practicing that before doing more physics. I will start all lessons with some "triage" to find what are the most important topics to study.

Effective communication: There are no bad subjects, only bad teachers. A student is able to understand anything if it is communicated in a language they understand. Personally, the teachers who have been the most impactful in my life are those who make the effort, with analogies, demonstrations, videos, and various other methods to effectively communicate a concept. I will check in with a student constantly to ensure they understand a concept before moving on. I will recap what was discussed at the end of the lesson and answer any questions they have.

Self-motivation: Self-interest is the most powerful motivator there is. I make my students set reasonable goals for themselves, and assign homework that will help them achieve those goals.

To summarize, my lesson plan is:
1. start with some review questions to find out what the student struggles with the most (5-10 minutes)
2. go over foundational concepts by explaining and doing practice questions (10-20 minutes)
3. once those concepts are understood, guide the student through curriculum topics with more practice questions, and, if necessary, going back to step 2.
4. recap of all the topics discussed, asking the student what was learned/practiced, while I give feedback on what the student improved on and what needs more improvement.
5. help the student set a clear actionable goal, with a clear deadline, and assign homework that helps achieve that goal.
