About Tom
Over the course of my postgraduate studies at Durham University, where I received my BA and MA with first-class honours — achieving the highest mark in my MA cohort — I have been teaching medieval literature for the Department of English Studies. Outside of the classroom I have experience as an exam and essay marker, and in providing one-to-one feedback and essay consultation for my students. I am also familiar with the AQA, OCR and Edexcel exam boards at A level.

Based on my teaching experience, my preferred method is to ask students to provide me with pieces of work they have submitted, ahead of our lessons, so that I can identify their teaching needs and tailor lesson plans accordingly. I have found that the best results come from working out concrete, actionable feedback, encouraging students to play to their strengths and identify areas for improvement and study. I can then help them to plan for upcoming assignments and proof their work to keep them on track for improved marks and exam outcomes. Lessons are typically an hour but can be longer or shorter as the student prefers.
