About Kiera
My name is Kiera and I have lived in the United States my whole life. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Sustainability Studies degree from my hometown in New Mexico. I have now moved to Edinburgh to pursue a Master of Science in Wildlife Biology and Conservation at Edinburgh Napier University. I love to travel to different countries to experience life outside my own little bubble. Meeting new people from all around the world and having the opportunity to learn about different cultures and languages has, by far, been what I value the most from my travels. As someone who has been a student for most of my life, I fully understand the challenges that are associated with student life. I believe it is vital to understand the basics of maths and science before we can move forward with more complex topics. As a tutor, I like to take my time to ensure my students fully grasp what it is they're trying to learn. As a tutor and a student myself, I love asking and being asked questions, because I believe it is the easiest way to avoid confusion and misunderstandings. As a student or a parent who is seeking a tutor, I would like to emphasise how important it is to be patient and to be prepared for each lesson. I can assure you that I hold both these skills, in addition to empathy, kindness, time management, and active listening skills.

My teaching techniques vary depending on the topic. If it is in regard to maths, I typically ask for the topic that we will be discussing at least 2 hours prior to our session. This is because I like to come as prepared as possible and bring example questions with me to include the process step-by-step in as much detail as possible. In my experience, taking as much time as necessary to understand one maths problem can make all the difference when trying to move forward onto the next. It is extremely important for children to understand the foundation of maths before we jump into more challenging topics like algebra (depending on the grade level and age). In regard to biology, I believe keeping lessons fun and interesting are the best ways to keep children interested and to allow them to really want to learn each topic. To do this, I try to relate topics to most things we see or use or do in our everyday life. As a very basic example, if the topic is about anatomy, I like to mention that as humans, we can't see each other's bones because we have endoskeletons, which means all of our bones are inside hiding behind things like our skin. While on the other hand, if you look at bugs like spiders and beetles, you can see their skeletons because they have exoskeletons, meaning they are on the outside as opposed to us, humans, who have skeletons on the inside. Most of my lessons are 1 hour long but can also vary widely depending on the student's needs and topic of the day. I offer lessons to all ages ranging from 3 to 15 years old.

I hired Kiera to tutor my two daughter (ages 10 and 12) in math for all of last school year. She was super patient with both of them and very kind to all of us. We were sad to hear she was moving, otherwise we would've like to have her again! My kids just loved her!
I hired Kiera to tutor my 2 daughters (ages 10 and 12) for all of last school year. They both needed more support and help in math and Kiera was able to help them improve significantly so they wouldn't fall behind. She was always very kind and patient with my daughters who both just loved her! I was sad to hear she will be moving, otherwise I would have asked for her help again!
