About Octavian
I am a full-time Physics tutor with a research background from the University of Oxford, where I conducted work in Medical Physics and delivered over 1,400 hours of formal university teaching. I left that position to focus entirely on private tutoring — because one-on-one Physics teaching is where I do my most effective work.
My Physics credentials: an MSc from Paris, a BEng from Toulouse, and an MSc in Radiation Biology from Oxford. I have been teaching Physics privately since 2009 — more than 10,000 hours across high school, IB, SAT, Oxford PAT, and university coursework up to the Master's level, in both the British and international systems. The physics is the same on either side of the Atlantic: in New York, I prepare students for AP Physics (1, 2, and C), Regents Physics, the SAT, IB, and college courses.
The outcomes speak for themselves. Students I have prepared have gone on to study Physics at Oxford and Harvard. Twin sisters I tutored in A-level Physics and the Oxford Physics Aptitude Test (PAT) both received offers from Oxford. A student I coached back from near-failure rebuilt his confidence and earned a First — the top result in the British system — in his first year at King's College London. A student who sat the British IGCSE exams just eight months after arriving from the Gulf achieved the top grade in Physics, Math, Biology, and Chemistry.
I am one of very few tutors in New York who can prepare students for the Oxford PAT with genuine insider knowledge of how Oxford selects its Physics undergraduates — having taught within the department for over a decade.
I work with a small number of students at any one time and take on only those who are serious about the subject. If that is you, get in touch.

Every student starts with a diagnostic session. I identify precisely where the gaps are — not just in content knowledge, but in physical intuition, mathematical fluency, and test-taking technique — and build the entire program around closing them. There is no generic curriculum: the plan is specific to your course, your level, and the time you have — whether that is AP Physics C in May, the Regents in June, or a college midterm next month.
Sessions are demanding. I do not spend time on material a student already understands, and I do not manufacture false confidence with easy problems. We work on what is actually holding the student back, and we work on it until it is no longer a problem.
Physics at the AP level and beyond is not a memorization subject. It requires building a coherent picture of how the world works — mechanically, electromagnetically, thermodynamically, quantum mechanically — and developing the ability to apply that picture to problems you have never seen before. That is what I teach. Past exams are a tool, not a curriculum.
Within 24 hours of every session, the student receives fully typed notes of what we covered, theoretical refreshers on the concepts that need further attention, and a written summary of where they stand and what to focus on before the next lesson. Parents are copied on everything as standard. This is part of every lesson I teach, without exception.
I teach online and in person throughout New York City. I have a strict cancellation policy: lessons canceled with less than 24 hours' notice are charged in full, as a missed slot cannot be offered to another student. Exceptions are made only for serious illness with a doctor's note.

Octavian helped my daughter Sandra overcome her dyslexia and be among the best in her class. She scored 780 on the Math portion of the SAT. Sandra now actually thinks and no longer learns formulas by heart without understanding their meaning. Her fear of Math is gone and she is now doing very well, majoring in Economics.
My son Jerry worked with Octavian throughout high school, and I saw firsthand the impact he had. Jerry always put in the effort, but math never came easily to him. Octavian helped him develop a much deeper understanding of the material instead of just showing him how to get through homework problems.
Over time, Jerry earned A's in both Algebra and Calculus and scored a perfect 800 on the SAT Math section. He was also admitted to Columbia University, which meant he could receive an outstanding education without having to move across the country.
What I appreciated most was that Octavian treated tutoring as more than preparing for the next test. He expected Jerry to think, explain his reasoning, and really master the concepts. That approach paid off.
I would recommend Octavian to any student who is willing to work hard but finds math more difficult than other subjects. He has a way of making challenging ideas much more approachable, and in Jerry's case, the results spoke for themselves.View more recommendations
