About Esmond
I have experience of a broad range of learning environments and teaching styles, including home education, the Oxbridge tutorial format and classroom-style teaching in both the private/grammar and state/academy sectors.
I worked as a Teaching Assistant at Chelsea Academy, London, in 2013-14 as part of RGS Guildford’s Outreach Scheme there. In a classroom setting, I have led and assisted classes for year groups and ability levels from year 7 to GCSE and top to bottom sets. I have also provided mentoring to Oxbridge applicants. I have further developed creative teaching skills in the course of both music directing and stage directing work, and clear and engaging communication of content and ideas through delivering talks and presentations on interdisciplinary topics in seminars in the course of my own studies.
I have extensive industry experience in music, as a composer, director, producer and singer, and in the creative arts more broadly, informing my teaching in these areas. As a freelance composer, my compositions have won and finalised in national and high-profile university competitions, and been performed by such artists as the BBC Singers. I produced and artistically directed my first opera production, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, in 2016, with an international cast of singers from leading British and European conservatoires, and I’m currently Artistic Director and co-Musical Director of the semi-professional early music and early opera ensemble, Theatron Oneiron, which I founded as a first-year undergraduate. I’m also a classically trained, semi-professional singer, currently a Choral Exhibitioner in the Choir of The Queen’s College and formerly a Choral Scholar at Guildford Cathedral and Exeter College Chapel Choir, and member of the Iken Scholars as well as many other ensembles; and I frequently perform as a recitalist and as a soloist in oratorios and opera productions. I have previously studied piano and violin (to Trinity Guildhall Advanced Certificate and ABRSM grade 6 standard respectively).
I'm currently a finalist in History at the University of Oxford. My degree has involved substantial interdisciplinary work with music, the visual arts and literature, as well as language work in Latin, French and Italian. I, moreover, studied Music to A-Level, scoring 99%+ at both GCSE and A-Level. I have extensive knowledge of music, history, history of art and literature, with particular expertise in the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, the European folk revival, and – within music – post-tonal and contemporary composition, although I am also confident teaching more broadly. I share details of and blog about interartistic developments and culture in medieval and Renaissance Italy, drawing on my own travels in Italy, at (concealed information) and (concealed information)

I tutor academic and composition components of Music at all levels up to A-Level and equivalent. I provide separate tuition in both music theory and composition.
I also tutor History, History of Art, and Latin to A-Level, and English, Graphic Design and Maths to GCSE/IGCSE (see my separate ads for these subjects for details). I provide mentoring, including guidance on personal statements, submitted work, admissions tests and interviews, for students applying to study History or its joint schools at Oxbridge and other universities, and, more broadly, can help students to develop essay writing, problem-solving, research and study skills.
My experience encompasses a range of teaching styles and learning environments, including home education, project- and inquiry-based learning, the Oxbridge tutorial format, and classroom-style teaching in both the private grammar and state academy sectors.
In my own teaching, I combine two broad approaches: the greater scope for intellectual flexibility and curiosity, and the heightened freedom to range across subjects or pursue individual topics in greater depth according to each student’s interests, prominent in university- or home education-style learning; and a rigorous and comprehensive attention to exam syllabi designed to ensure that the understanding and knowledge my students develop remain carefully targeted towards securing their desired grades in any traditional summative assessments such as GCSEs or A-Levels.
My teaching is student-centred: the best tutoring, in my view, is that which guides and facilitates the student in their own learning journey, in contradistinction to traditional teacher-led instruction. I work with each student to tailor lessons to their individual priorities (whether those be understanding subject material, exam content, or honing particular skills such as analysis) and learning style. I place particular emphasis on developing a deep-seated intrinsic passion for learning for its own sake in my students and on encouraging them to think independently and critically and, ultimately, originally. I am, moreover, dedicated to seeing palpable improvement in each of my students and will always put in extra effort, for example through taking time in preparation to track down particular useful resources and additional reading or through running overtime, to achieve this end.
