About Joel
I am a professional musician based in North London (N4), specialising in jazz performance. Originally from Hertfordshire on the North London border, I began learning the saxophone and piano from a young age. I spent my teenage years performing in a range of different ensembles and had wonderful opportunities to perform regularly, with some highlights being at Wembley Stadium and the World Music Contest in Belgium and Germany. I have a degree (BMus) in music from Canterbury Christ Church University, and a master's (MMus) in Jazz Performance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. I have been fortunate enough to study with top UK jazz musicians Julien Siegel, Tom Challenger, Hans Köller, Jean Toussaint, Byron Wallen, Martin Speake and US musicians Braxton Cook and Melissa Aldana. Since graduating I have built a successful portfolio career in the performing arts. As a composer and bandleader, I have released music with my project ‘The Sound of Movement’ with our debut album coming out soon. I perform regularly each week in a range of settings such as jazz clubs, theatres, music venues and at private events. I have toured and performed internationally. Recent performances include Ronnie Scotts and Pizza Express Jazz Club. Recent private clients have been Netflix, The Wall Street Journal and the Shakespeare's Globe to name a few. I currently teach for Haringey Music Service and Hertfordshire Music Service teaching one to one piano, saxophone and clarinet lessons and working as a band leader for Haringey Young Musicians. I also work as an assistant tutor at the International Jazz Summer School, an adult education residential jazz school which attracts students from a multitude of countries. This allowed me to work alongside top UK jazz musicians and educators Simon Purcell, Liane Carroll, Julian Siegel, James Maddren, Will Glaser, Loz Garrett and Sophie Bancroft. I have previously worked for Enfield Music Service, for a number of years in which I taught at many schools in the borough. I taught one to one lessons, group lessons, lead whole class projects and assisted in running wind orchestras and other large ensembles. I have also organised and run a number of school concerts throughout the year at the different schools for parents. I gained a lot of teaching experience through this job, and enjoyed learning on their termly teacher training days.

My lessons are for students of all abilities wanting to learn the saxophone, piano or clarinet. I specialise in jazz, improvisation, jazz harmony, language and composition. Whether you are a complete beginner or have completed your grade 8 and are looking for the next steps my lessons are tailored to you! I am a flexible teacher who works with students both on a weekly, fortnightly or drop in basis. I am very passionate about jazz and work hard to share this passion with my students so they leave each lesson inspired to play more of this incredible art form. My ethos is to find the student's passion and love, and expand from there. Inspiration and enjoyment are priorities for me, and I feel these should be at the centre of the learning experience. I am a practical, hands-on teacher, and always play along with my students; encouraging performance, collaboration and jamming together from the offset. Everyone learns differently, so I use my experience and training to adapt each lesson to fit each individual personally. I teach all levels, ranging from complete beginners to advanced and currently have students of all ages. Through my degree in music I completed modules in teaching and learning. I then followed this with regular music teacher training provided by in-school music services I have previously worked for. I have years of experience in teaching private students, alongside teaching small groups, classroom music teaching in schools, residential summer music schools, running and assisting workshop days and running large group educational ensembles. I have a degree in Music (BMus) from Canterbury Christ Church University, and a master's (MMus) in Jazz Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

Our son always comes away from Joel’s lesson in a good mood. He has a great rapport with his pupils and I’ve no hesitation highly recommending him.
Joel is a fantastic music teacher. Both my girls love learning with him. He is kind, patient and motivational. He is also an exceptionally talented musician with a clear love of music which is inspiring. I can’t recommend Joel highly enough.
We have been working with Joel for 6 years now. He teaches our son piano and saxophone. Joel exceeds all expectations, increasingly through the years. Joel is a balanced, remarkably kind and patient person. Joel has unexpectedly clever ways of developing our boy. We started with level 1 saxophone, after working hard with Joel he advised us to attempt for level 5 directly, which he passed with distinction. He could have asked us to follow one by one every grade, but this how Joel is. We are so lucky to know him and our boy has advanced very fast with Joel's care!
Joel has been giving me piano lessons for a few years - he is an excellent inspiring teacher with a great deal of patience - he explains very clearly and always makes the lessons varied and fun. I would highly recommend Joel to anyone who has a love of music and wants to learn from a great musician. Tina Read
