About Phoebe

Short version: Who am I? I'm Phoebe, a native teacher from Sydney Australia. Preparation? I have a degree in TESOL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) from Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, plus a TEFL certificate that I studied in Madrid, Spain. Experience? 5 years of experience working in academies in Spain and in the United Kingdom. Specifically: • 2019 - 2020 English teacher at Seif English Academy, Madrid, Spain • 2017 - 2018 English teacher at Britannia English School, Manchester, United Kingdom • 2013 - 2014 English teacher at English Connection Academy, Fuenlabrada, Madrid • 2011 - 2013 conversation assistant at Rayuela school, Villanueva del Pardillo, Madrid Long version: I am Phoebe Lee, native English teacher from Sydney, Australia. I have a degree in TESOL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) from Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, plus a TEFL certificate that I studied in Madrid, Spain. I also have a C1 level of Spanish, so if you have any questions that you would like to consult in Spanish, I would be happy to help you. I have over 6 years of experience teaching English in Spain and in the UK. I worked as a conversation assistant in a public school in 2011, and then in 2013 I did the TEFL certificate to be able to work as an English teacher and started at English Connection, an English academy in Fuenlabrada, Madrid. There, I taught children, adolescents and adults. I prepared my students for the Trinity exam, of which 100% passed. I loved the experience, but for personal reasons, I had to move to Manchester in the UK in 2014. This is where I did my degree in TESOL, one of my biggest achievements in my professional career. In the 3-year grade, I learned about language acquisition, different types of students, and the different teaching methods available to each teacher. In the last year of my career, I started working at Britannia, a well-known English academy in Manchester, where I taught students of approximately 15 different nationalities. Seeing how different nationalities got together and shared their cultures and experiences through learning English seemed like a very enriching experience. In 2018, after graduating with honors, I became pregnant and it was the main reason I decided to return to raise our future family in Madrid and to settle in Spain, a country with a wonderful culture and quality of life. I gave birth in January 2019, and in July of the same year I started working at Seif English Academy, an academy in the center of Madrid. In this position I taught adults from beginner to advanced levels. I learned a lot in this position, since the academy has a wonderful team and they give feedback that really helped me get the best out of myself as a professional. In March of this year, I decided to become autonomous and start teaching English online. I am advertising here, at superprof, hoping to find new students. I'd love to meet you!

My teaching method has a great focus in that you are really using English to communicate in a practical context. That when someone speaks to you, you know what to say without having to translate or search for the corresponding verb tense. I want you to speak spontaneously, using natural, high-frequency expressions. Basically, that you speak fluently. Fluency is NOT achieved by studying grammar books or memorizing vocabulary lists. If it is achieved by exposing yourself to the language in its true context, be it through authentic podcasts, texts such as books or articles, and of course, speaking with a native who knows what you need to improve your level. I have also learned a second language (Spanish) and I know how it feels when you reach an intermediate / high level and it seems that you are stagnant. You have already studied all the grammar, you have already seen all the vocabulary, you go to classes, but you don't see improvement and you don't know why. Well, I will give you the answer: it is time to acquire English, not learn it! The traditional memorization based teaching system does NOT work for languages. Although they share certain things, languages are not mathematics, so they should not be treated as is. Languages can sometimes be ambiguous, there are things in which there is no definitive answer. When I studied Language Acquisition in my career, one of the things that was said was that a trait of a good language learner was tolerance of ambiguity. Accept that you won't always understand everything the first time, but that you've captured the general idea. Accept that languages are not black and white but that there is also a scale of different shades. Nor do I totally rule out memorization as a basic tool in learning a language, it is clear that when you are a beginner it is necessary to memorize the days of the week, the places in the city, the irregular past etc. But when you get to that level you start to see the same grammar, the same subjects, the same vocabulary: it's time to acquire the language. Acquiring means seeing the language in its natural context. Think, when you learned your native language (I imagine for most it will be Spanish), how did you really learn it? Listening to it in context, seeing it on TV, on the radio, in books etc. No, you are not the same sponge that you were when you were a child. But do not doubt the great capacity of the human brain, even the adult brain. You will be amazed at what you are capable of! What I can offer you is speaking, and listening, reading and writing exercises taking into account and marking where you are on your learning path. If you are a beginner, we learn and memorize more than we will acquire, since a house begins with the foundations. If you are already intermediate or upper intermediate, we will apply all the strategies that I have mentioned above so that you can achieve fluency. We will discuss your goals in the test class, and based on these, we will create a plan. My online classes promote interaction and communication as the most important aspect of the language. So if you need to review, for example, used to and used to, we will go over the grammar, but most of the time will be spent using these forms naturally in conversation. If you've come this far, I'm sorry to have made you read this essay, but learning languages is really something that I'm passionate about, apart from how nice it is to see how my students improve. I encourage you to try the first class with me for free and without obligation. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you!
