About Samuel
I am a professional and passionate English teacher from Melbourne, Australia. I have three years of in-class teaching experience and certifications in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and IELTS preparation coaching. I am motivated to teach by my love of meeting new people every day and helping them to achieve their goals. So far, I’ve taught over a thousand people to use English with confidence. In my lessons I use Inductive teaching techniques. Inductive techniques focuses on students learning the natural way – through actually using the language. Inductive teaching also means that things like vocabulary definitions, grammar rules and sentence structures only get fully explained after you already understand them. My lessons are built to allow you to learn while having fun by using activities, examples, role-play and real-world materials. You will still be learning all those boring (but important!) language rules but it will feel like you are just having a good time. My university students were shocked when they could use correct grammar in exams even though they couldn’t remember learning it!
My lessons typically go for either 30 minutes or an hour. For lessons focused on oral proficiency, or those intended for children, I tend to offer 30 minute lessons to keep things short and fun. For lessons focused around increasing academic performance, test preparation or writing I usually offer hour long lessons so we can really get into a learning flow state together.
I have two relevant teaching qualifications - a level 5 TEFL Certificate from The TEFL Academy and a IELTS Trainer Certificate from IDP Australia. In addition to that I have two degrees - a BA in History and Philosophy and a Honours in Politics.
In terms of work experience I have an aggregation of three years teaching experience. I taught for two years (2020-2022) at Beijing International Studies University (if you can read Chinese: 北京第二外国语学院). I absolutely loved my time here. I got to teach a thousand students at just this university. I taught English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Oral English, Public Speaking, Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking. My students consistently achieved higher than average grade point averages with many classes averaging at A.
From 2019 to 2020 I taught at Peking University Experimental Kindergarten. I ran one class with around three dozen students in it. Every day I would teach the students to read, sing songs (the loved jingle bells for some reason) and play games. While I was there, I developed a deep love of teaching children to read – so much so that I bought hundreds of children’s eBooks so as to continue teaching reading comprehension for children on this platform.
