About Felix

Brooklyn-raised musician Felix Hartley is known for his steadfast dedication to jazz music and his serious work ethic. He has performed with, and under the direction of, many experienced musicians such as Charles McPherson, Charles Tolliver, Camille Thurman, Darrell Green, Jean-Michel Pilc, Kevin Dean and Ilya Lushtak. Hartley has performed internationally, including in Cuba with Zack O’Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz All Stars tour. In New York City, he has appeared at venues such as The Django, Cellar Dog, Rockwood Hall and The Jazz Standard. In Montreal, QC, he has performed at Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill and Le Basement Jazz Club. In Toronto, he has played at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts backing the McGill Vocal Conglomerate led by Camille Thurman and Darrell Green. Hartley has studied with some of the best bass players, including Buster Williams, Ira Coleman, Curtis Lundy, Dezron Douglas, Ricky Rodriguez and Grammy Award-winner Mary-Ann McSweeney. A recent graduate of McGill University in Montreal, QC, Hartley previously attended the famed LaGuardia High School, where he honed his craft under the tutelage of Kevin Blancq. Hartley speaks both French and English fluently, resides in Brooklyn and aims to continue pursuing his passion while upholding the standards jazz music’s heroes have set.

When studying with me, students can expect a tailored and attentive approach to our lessons. I aim to incorporate my students’ interests into the lesson in order to foster enthusiasm and creativity. Every student is different, therefore, assignments will vary based on their preferences. From Jazz, to Classical, Rock and Free, all levels are welcome to study with me! A typical lesson will look like so: Lesson Plan: Student will be able to outline the changes of Autumn Leaves by playing each of the song’s chords in root and 1st inversions at 60 BPM Objectives: -Identify the qualities of each chord: C minor 7, F dominant, Bb Maj 7, Eb maj 7, A half diminished 7, D dominant + flat 13, G minor 7. -Play the 1-3-5-7 of a C Major, C minor, C dominant, and C half diminished, one octave, out of time -Outline the changes on Autumn Leaves by playing each of its chords in root position, 100 BPM. -Outline the changes on Autumn Leaves by playing each of its chords in 1st inversion 70 BPM Anticipatory Set: 5 min What are some things that you think are important in a bassline? Procedure: 25 min -Identify the qualities of each chord in Autumn Leaves -Explain the importance of triads in bass lines Student: -Demonstrate an understanding of Major, Minor, Dominant and Diminished 7th chords by playing their respective 1-3-5-7s in the key of C out of time Teacher: -With your instrument, Outline the changes of Autumn Leaves by playing each of its chord in root position, out of time Student: -With your instrument, Outline the changes of Autumn Leaves by playing each of its chord in root position, out of time Add metronome, 120 Bpm, repeat Teacher: -With your instrument, Outline the changes of Autumn Leaves by playing each of its chord in first inversion, out of time Student: -With your instrument, Outline the changes of Autumn Leaves by playing each of its chord in first inversion, out of time Add metronome, 100 Bpm, repeat Closure: What can we add to make this bassline further? Homework: - Listen to Cannonball Adderley’s version of Autumn Leaves. Identify one thing you like about the bass playing. - Practice outlining the changes of Autumn Leaves by playing each chord of the song in Root and 1st inversion, at 100 BPM. Alternative Strategies: Too hard: -Slow the tempo of the root position 1-3-5-7 to 60 BPM -Add a repeating rhythmic motif to keep the student’s attention while working on root position. For Example, Dotted quarter notes for each chord tone.
