About Coriana
Hey there! I'm Coriana, a Middle School Reading & Language Arts Tutor Dedicated to Building Confidence and Mastery. As an experienced tutor specializing in grades 6–8, I bring a patient, structured, and highly personalized approach to every lesson. I focus on the core literacy skills students need to succeed—not just in the classroom, but in life: reading comprehension, clear writing, citing evidence, and organizing ideas. I believe that every student is capable of growth when given the right tools, the right support, and the right encouragement. My sessions are visually engaging, aligned with Virginia SOL standards, and adapted for all types of learners. Whether your child is struggling, thriving, or somewhere in between, I meet them exactly where they are—and help them move forward with confidence. I create a safe, positive learning environment where students feel heard, supported, and empowered. I don’t just tutor; I teach students how to think critically, study effectively, and express themselves with clarity and purpose. Most importantly, I help them understand why these skills matter in the real world—by connecting learning to their goals, dreams, and future careers.

I specialize in tutoring middle school students, grades 6–8, with a focus on Reading and Language Arts aligned to Virginia SOL standards. I believe this age group sits in a unique “sweet spot”—they’re capable of real independence but still need structure, support, and confidence-building as they transition from concrete to abstract thinking.
My teaching is grounded in the belief that true learning starts with clarity, confidence, and connection. I prioritize:
o Visual Aids & Multiple Learning Styles:
o I regularly incorporate visual tools like anchor charts, graphic organizers, color-coded examples, and digital media to reach auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. Every student learns differently, and I adapt my instruction to match.
o Going Back to Move Forward:
o If a student is confused, I never push forward for the sake of pacing. I take the time to trace the confusion back to its source—even if that means revisiting earlier-grade skills. A strong foundation is the only path to lasting growth.
o Socratic Dialogue & Real-World Relevance:
o I ask thoughtful questions and engage in open-ended discussion. I often ask students about their interests and dreams—"What do you want to be when you grow up?"—and use their answers to show how literacy skills connect to real-world success.
o Foundational Study & Writing Skills:
o I embed academic skills into every lesson: how to study, how to take notes, how to construct paragraphs, cite sources, and use evidence to support a claim. These are the life-long tools that make students independent and confident learners.
o Positive Reinforcement:
o I celebrate effort, growth, and self-awareness. I aim to be a consistent source of encouragement—because when a student feels supported, they take risks, ask questions, and believe in their ability to improve.
As mentioned above, I primarily work with middle school students.
o Focus areas: reading comprehension, writing skills, SOL prep
o Ability levels: on-level, struggling, and advanced learners
o Additional information: I have experience with and offer support to students with students with learning differences.
While I adapt based on the student and topic, a general lesson might look like this:
o Check-In & Warm-Up (5–10 mins)
o Quick review or Do Now prompt
o Chat about goals and mindset
o Review previous work or clarify prior confusion
o Mini-Lesson with Visuals (10–15 mins)
o Introduce or revisit a concept (e.g., main idea, text structure, citing evidence)
o Use a visual anchor or modeling strategy
o Make real-world or career-related connection
o Guided Practice (15–20 mins)
o Work through examples together
o Use graphic organizers, color-coded tools, sentence stems
o Emphasize academic habits (note-taking, underlining evidence, etc.)
o Independent Work (10–15 mins)
o Student applies concept on their own
o I provide support and observe their strategies
o Review & Wrap-Up (5 mins)
o Reflect on what was learned
o Reinforce key skill or vocabulary
o Give short practice task or study tip to take home
I combine high structure with high empathy, connect academics to real life and future goals, and empower students to own their learning. I also create a space where questions are celebrated and confusion is welcomed as a learning opportunity. This is what sets me apart as a tutor.
