About Ben
I have played and recorded across a number of bands and styles for more than 30 years.
I studied Jazz at Massey University in Wellington - and have a particular love of music from Africa & the Americas.
I've played and recorded across many styles: jazz, funk, African, pop, reggae & hip hop. I also run a weekly jazz gig in Auckland.
Currently performing with Auckland Jazz Orchestra, an 11-piece Ghanaian High-life Afrobeat band Ozi Ozaa, and with jazz groups from small to larger.

I've been teaching the saxophone to beginners and advanced students for over 20 years.
I teach adults & children, from absolute beginner to advanced, including those picking up the sax again after a break, or who have previously learned another instrument.
I offer in-person lessons at my teaching studio in Waterview, Auckland, and on-line lessons for intermediate/advanced students.
I take a personalised approach to teaching, focussing on the areas you'd like to improve, including:
- Saxophone technique
- Music reading
- Playing by ear
- Improvisation
- Music theory
- Playing in bands / horn sections
- Jazz, funk, rock & roll, hip-hop, ska & reggae, world genres
Set your own goals, and learn at a pace you can handle. Everyone has their own reason for learning, and ultimately, it should be something you enjoy, even if you enjoy the challenge of it.
I make use of playalong recordings, transcriptions, my own materials and select books.
Adults: recommend 60 minutes weekly, fortnightly or casual for more advanced students.
Children: 30 or 60 minutes weekly depending on age/level.

I don't offer a free full lesson, there's just no way to untick that on this platform.
The first lesson is usually the most valuable! Lots of information to take away and work on.
But we can have a phone or video chat consultation about your learning goals first, and how I can help.
And there's no obligation to continue beyond your first lesson if it's not a fit.
