About Shayna

Hello, I am Ms. Moon, the author of 'Tzanellda: The End of the Beginning', a self-published fictional novel- book one of its series. A book I began to put together in 10th grade, and self-published shortly after graduation. Throughout my school career I've held a number of accomplishments through reading and writing. After 6th grade I was deemed too advanced for the typical reading class, so by 7th grade I was taken out of reading completely and placed in a foreign language (French). I've won poetry contests, written music, and performed in spoken word performances where I've had those who listened to my works offer to manage a YouTube page for me because of how they enjoyed it.

And though this may all sound good, I started in the same position that your child is in, now. There is nothing 'special' about me that made reading and writing easier for me - both are hard, especially when you are trying to understand what another person is writing. The only thing that set me apart was interest. I was a humble child, who a lot like Rudolph, wasn't accepted by the children around me and felt isolated.

During a rainy day in elementary school, we had indoor recess, and in my forced isolation, I was stuck reading a book that was a few grades higher than the grade I was in- it was called Morph (as in metamorphosis). I had no idea what that word meant at the time, and grew frustrated, initially, because I felt I wouldn't understand the book at all. To make matters worse, it had no pictures (I was in kindergarten).

Long story short, I wound up challenging myself to read it anyway, was able to use context clues to get a basic understanding of what the word meant, and was so captivated by the story that I felt like I was spirited away from where I was into the story. I want to help your child find that same interest moment - to look at reading and writing as more of escapes than unbearable chores or tasks.

About the lesson

It is my goal as a reading and writing tutor of children 5 to 14 yrs old to understand where your child's reading level is currently at, what is causing their disconnect with the concepts, and finding alternative methods that go beyond general education to alleviate their exact issues and your concerns.
My lessons are more reading focused than writing focused as one cannot write properly if they cannot read properly. My intention is to get them comfortable with reading, both to self and aloud, so that when they get to writing, it flows effortlessly. It is my hope that your child finds the joy and release in writing as I have, or at the very least, to take the task out of reading and writing so that it is no longer a stress, fear, or embarrassment.
