About Katie

I’ve been a professional writer for TV commercials for 14 years, working with brands including Nike, Adidas, Coca-Cola and Marks & Spencer, alongside some of the world’s leading directors and production companies. Basically, I make a living out of words, finding the right ones, getting rid of the wrong ones and occasionally staring at a sentence for far too long.

I studied History of Art and spent eight years living and teaching English in Rome, Milan, Barcelona and Nice. Teaching made me look at my own language completely differently, it wasn’t enough to know something sounded right, I had to understand why and, more importantly, how to explain it to someone else.

I now live in London with my children, who also get subjected to my love of books, words and stories!

Whether we’re pulling apart a novel, arguing about a poem, working on grammar or creating a story from scratch, I want lessons to be curious, relaxed and fun. Language is something to play with, question and enjoy, and that’s how I like to teach it.

About the lesson

I’m a professional writer and I’ve been teaching English for eight years, so basically I spend a lot of my life thinking about words. How they work, why they work and, occasionally, why they make absolutely no sense at all.

If you’re studying English Literature, we can get stuck into the books, plays and poetry on your syllabus without making them feel like something you have to 'get right'. Whether it’s Lord of the Flies, An Inspector Calls, poetry or whatever text has landed on your reading list, we’ll talk about what’s actually going on. Who’s behaving badly? What is the writer really trying to say? Why does one tiny word matter? And, most importantly, how do you turn all of those thoughts into a great essay?

Creative Writing is where we can have even more fun. Bring me a half-written story, a character you don’t know what to do with, an idea scribbled on the back of an envelope, or absolutely nothing at all. We can work on characters, dialogue, description, structure and finding your own voice, and learn how to edit without taking all the life out of your writing.

And if English isn’t your first language, that’s something I have eight years of experience with too. I’ve taught in Italy, Spain and France, from beginners through to Business English and university preparation. We can work on grammar and vocabulary, but also on the English people actually use, the strange expressions, subtle differences and little bits of language you don’t always find in a textbook.

I don’t want lessons to feel like an hour of me talking while you take notes. I want us to talk, argue about books, play around with words, ask questions, make mistakes and work out what makes good writing good.

So bring me a book, an essay, a story, an idea, or just your curiosity, and we’ll start there.
