About Alwin

I recently retired as a professor of Comparative World Literature from California State University, Long Beach, after forty-five years of successful university teaching experience. As a professor at CSULB (1989-2014), I taught a full range of courses, from freshman to graduate level. For twenty years prior to that appointment, I served on the English faculties at the State University of New York, Buffalo; Reed College; Tulane University; and Loyola University. In those positions, I taught numerous courses in English composition as well as in literature and other humanities subjects. I have also tutored several students in private sessions, including ESL students and several who needed preparation assistance for the AP, ACT, and SAT exams. I am currently tutoring students on a freelance basis in the Los Angeles area.
I have edited and graded thousands of student essays during the course of my teaching career. I have worked with students at every level of proficiency, and I have had significant success improving their skills, contributing substantially to their academic performance as well as their preparation for career opportunities. As I always tell my students, and as research demonstrates, there are no skills more important to their success than improving their critical thinking, reading comprehension, and writing proficiency. I have superior grammatical expertise as well as knowledge of various rhetorical styles and guideline formats, such as MLA, APA, and Chicago. I have advanced proficiency in French and have a basic knowledge of Spanish, Italian, and German. I have published several articles in major academic journals and presented papers at many national and international conferences. During my career, I have taught a wide range of diverse student populations and believe strongly in the principles of cultural, ethnic, and gender equality.

About the lesson

I have a Teaching with Technology certificate from CSULB and I'm currently working on TESOL certification. I have implemented current composition theories and practices in my classes, and I work very closely and interactively with students, mentoring and guiding their skill development and motivating them to be successful. I tailor my pedagogical strategies and lessons to the proficiency level and goals of individual students.
