About BJ
I've tutored writers for many years, have guest lectured at various universities (Duke, Belmont, University of California System, etc.), and -- as a parent of three -- bring patience and kindness to every engagement. I also, quite simply, love writing. In the past two years I've written more than 1.2 million words that have been published by news organizations. And I recognize that none of that would have been possible without capable, committed teachers.

I use a four-step process:
(1) Read sample student materials (on my dollar, not theirs) to better understand their skill level.
(2) Learn what type of writer the student aspires to become (writers who inspire them, and/or samples that motivate them), including skills they want to develop most in the short term.
(3) Work with the student on bite-sized lessons (how to use grammar to our advantage, what makes a paragraph resonate with readers, etc.) to augment the tools in their toolbox.
(4) Work with the student on sample projects (mirroring those they complete for school) from start to finish -- from conceiving to brainstorming to outlining to writing to editing.
