About Sophia
Ever since I can remember, it has always been an aspiration of mine to teach (preceded by a brief desire to be a bus driver when I was very small). My life so far has been based in and around languages and education, starting with the qualifications I worked hard to gain: BA French and Russian, MA Screen Translation, Spanish SKE and PGCE. I gained QTS after this and loved helping students to understand languages, the world and themselves better while meeting or exceeding target grades.
As much as I love teaching in classrooms, it is in offering one to one support that I truly thrive. This is because I enjoy the creative freedom of meeting someone where they are and remaining patient and kind along their learning journey. I have experience of tutoring abroad and in the UK, as well as experience of teaching languages in UK schools, which means that I am very confident I can help you to get one step closer to your learning goal.
My teaching style is friendly, warm and professional, but I will always try and push you to achieve your best as anyone can be great at languages with the right support. I like to focus on the positives and only suggest one or two things to improve at a time, to give you a proper chance to work on them before moving on to something else.
In summary, I love people, I love languages and I love tutoring!

I am happy to tutor anyone from beginners to GCSE/A Level students or adults. It's never too early or late for languages!
I am very familiar with what students need to practise to pass GCSE exams as a former languages teacher and can focus on specific areas of the curriculum as needed. Getting my teaching degree also taught me the science behind learning and the optimal amount of new information to introduce so as not to overwhelm, but still remain challenging, as well as when to go back and remind you of past topics so that it can be embedded in your long term memory. As such, I'm very experienced with adapting plans to suit a diverse range of students, whether that's due to an SEN, an exam requirement, a difficulty with conjugation or anything else you could think of.
I am very passionate about French and Spanish and make sure to create engaging and interactive lessons that centre your needs and cover all four elements of language: speaking, listening, reading and writing. I am happy to add support and slowly remove it to make learning more accessible for different attainment levels and love to incorporate authentic materials from the entire Francophone / Hispanohablante world.
And the beauty of language is that it covers all aspects of life: history, politics, art, culture, geography, cuisine and so much more, meaning there is always a fresh angle to make a topic more interesting. So no more "I went to the park and played football" let's talk about something that interests you! And let's do it in an interactive way, using all the tools in my teacher toolkit, like games, creative writing, films, music, songs, newspaper articles, literature and so much more.
Please be aware that there is no need to be afraid of mistakes in my lessons. They are encouraged as it means that you are trying something new and making progress - plus think how many people regularly make mistakes in their native language! I also believe it's important to have the occasional laugh to stop you from crying at how nonsensical French grammar can be at times, so you will unfortunately have to deal with my bad jokes.
And of course, I am always open to suggestions and take feedback very seriously - don't be afraid to tell me if there's something you'd like to change!
So whether you are an adult trying to brush up for a holiday or a teenager trying to get the best grade you can for your GCSEs, I am very confident that I can help you to achieve your best and hopefully have some fun along the way.
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Sophia.
Perfect! At our first meeting, Sophia checked my ability level through conversation and simple written and listening tests. She then asked about hobbies and interests and preferred learning style. For the remainder of the lesson, Sophia provided engaging interaction. I noted that she explained concepts clearly and then checked my understanding. I am convinced that Sophia's tuition will significantly improve my language skills.
