Different learning and teaching techniques are better suited to different individuals, depending on their predisposition towards different ways of acquiring new information and their current level of knowledge. Furthermore, your habits, your exercise routine and your diet, just to mention a few, can impact how quickly and effectively you learn. I have created a questionnaire which will help me to get you know you a little before our first lesson and will also help me to choose the most appropriate learning strategy for you to start with. As I get yo know you better through our lessons and as natural result of your progress the learning strategy will change and develop further. It is very important that you are as honest as possible in the questionnaire, I will not share your answers with anyone and I will never compare you with anyone but yourself.

To clarify here, a learning strategy includes, but it is not limited to the structure of our lessons, what topics we cover and in what order. We will also work on establishing habits, for example we can create a habit that puts you into “Maths mode”, which will make it easier for you to begin working and will help you concentrate better.

Homework, if you are willing to let go of the stigma associated with it, is a vital tool for learning and a great way to make the most of the money you spend on private tuition! It is a vital tool for learning because it gets you to practise in conditions which are much closer to the exam conditions and it helps you reaffirm the concepts we learned together. On a basic biological level it strengthens the neural passages needed for you to solve a problem of a specific type. Ideally, I would set two homework sheets for you – one to be completed 2-3 hours after our lessons and another 2-3 days after our lesson. As our work together progresses we will adjust these times, so that we can always hit the prefect spots when you still remember the information, but it is on the verge of fading away a little. Effectively communicating to your brain that this is information that you need, so it should be stored. This way we will be able to get the most out of the time that you spend learning and the most our of each of our lessons.

Learning is wonderful and fascinating and it is also very different to taking exams. Learning can be viewed as the process of expanding your understanding, whereas an exam is a measurement of how much understanding you have gained on a specific topic. Therefore, a slightly different set of skills is required for each. In most schools one topics is taught throughout the length of the lesson. This is efficient in terms of learning the topic, but it doesn't allow you to practise selecting the correct method to solve a question, which is vital for exams. Additionally, in a lesson you always have help at hand, again great for learning, but it doesn't address exam like conditions effectively. Furthermore, the nature of exams as a tool for comparing individuals can lead to anxiety and consequently lower than expected grades. One of the aims of our lessons and your homework will be to make you more comfortable with the nature of exams. Learning strategies here will be entirely dependant on the student and their current level of ability. Examples of how some of the above goals could be achieved include taking regular short exams, learning how to mark exams, as well as more innovative means such as affirmations and visualisation.

In conclusion, it will be my job as your tutor to help you understand mathematical concepts, to help you improve and develop you learning skills, to help you prepare for the exams and to challenge you to explore your full potential. It will be your job as my student to put in the time and effort required to improve yourself, and to achieve your goals.
