About Benjamin
I am a qualified teacher and former England international athlete with more than 13 years’ teaching and tutoring experience. I have taught over 14,000 lessons and have worked at Sherborne School and Institut auf dem Rosenberg in Switzerland, supporting pupils through demanding British and international courses and examinations.
I have supported students studying GCSE and A-Level Physical Education, as well as IB Sports, Exercise and Health Science. My teaching covers the theoretical and analytical demands of the subject, including anatomy and physiology, training principles, movement analysis, skill acquisition, sports psychology, data interpretation, and extended written answers.
My experience as an international athlete gives me a practical understanding of training, performance, preparation, resilience, and competing under pressure. I use that experience to make theoretical content concrete and memorable, while keeping lessons closely focused on the relevant specification and examination requirements.
My approach combines academic rigour with calm encouragement. I identify precisely what is limiting a student’s progress, explain difficult material clearly, and teach the specific knowledge and examination skills needed to improve. I always aim to make lessons enjoyable as well as challenging.

Lessons are individually planned around the student’s examination board, current attainment, target grade, and particular areas for improvement. We begin by identifying gaps in subject knowledge and the question types or examination skills that need attention.
I teach theoretical knowledge and examination technique together. Depending on the student’s course, lessons may cover anatomy and physiology, physical training, movement analysis, health and fitness, skill acquisition, sports psychology, socio-cultural influences, data analysis, and the evaluation of sporting performance.
Students learn to interpret questions precisely, select relevant knowledge, apply it to sporting examples, and construct clear, well-developed answers. We use guided explanation, retrieval practice, examination questions, model responses, detailed feedback, and repeated improvement.
Lessons are intended for GCSE and A-Level Physical Education and IB Sports, Exercise and Health Science students who need to strengthen their knowledge, improve their written answers, or prepare systematically for examinations. In-person appointments are a minimum of 90 minutes, allowing sufficient time for substantial teaching, guided practice, and review.

I’ve known Mr. Lukas for a few years. He is a very patient and soft spoken tutor. I would recommend him.
Ben is a dedicated and passionate tutor. He’s kind, empathetic, and is dedicated not only to improving young students' understanding of their subject but also to helping them gain wisdom for life. I’ve appreciated his mentoring as a fellow father of young children, and would not hesitate to recommend him as a tutor.
Benjamin helped me study for my History and Geography A-levels during year 13 and when we started I had all Ds and I just finished my A-levels and received a B in both subjects something I didn't think was possible, and I put that up to the support and help he gave me, he was friendly and supportive the whole way through and at no point did he make me feel stupid for needing help, I was really struggling with figuring out how to right the essays and how to get everything I learnt across in my exams but we went through the questions and he showed me how much I needed to add of each section and how many facts and how to justify and explain them. I would 100% recommend him for anyone else because he really helped me get to a point academically that I didnt think I'd ever get to while also showing the areas I'm strong in and supporting me in the areas I'm not. Thank you :)
Ben has been great for my son, especially for the 11+ entrance exam prep. He has so much knowledge in different subjects and is so personable. He knows my child and what is required to keep him motivated for the lessons and his learning journey. My son has also gained so much confidence. I have seen the real benefits of working with Ben and would highly recommend him.
Ben has tutored my son for over a year, preparing him for ISEB 11+ pre-tests and beyond. He has achieved strong results with a firm but fair and patient approach to teaching. My son looks forward to meeting with Ben, and as a parent, he is good to communicate with and professional at all times.
Ben is a calm and professional tutor. My daughter really excelled under his tutorage. He is a great all rounder and can also target a particular subject or area. He always comes prepared and is able to plan and guide a student to the intended direction. He always puts his student first and adjusts his style to suit their learning. I would highly recommend Ben as a tutor.
Benjamin has been exceedingly helpful to me concerning advice and support to get me started in the online tutoring world. What has been even more valuable has been the principles he has given/imparted to me with regard to what it means to be a good teacher and tutor. He is very knowledgeable and thinks outside of the box whilst emphasising potential and tangible solutions to the many questions I had for him. Thank you Benjamin. Highly recommend.
Benjamin tutored our son for GSCE French and German. We were very impressed with his professionalism. He is a very experienced tutor who was always very organised and structured in his sessions, as well as being very patient and encouraging with our son. Benjamin was also very open to feedback and more than happy to adjust his tutoring style to better fit our son. We would highly recommend him as a tutor.
Ben is a very committed and knowledgeable person. He is passionate about his work and very dedicated and hardworking, I would recommend Ben to any student.
Benjamin is a committed and knowledgeable tutor with a skillful ability to stretch and bring out the best from any student.
Benjamin was my Geography tutor through my A levels. He helped me go from lacking in confidence at a grade C to enjoying the subject and achieving an A. Benjamin’s teaching methods are really effective retaining information and then applying it to written exams.
I found Ben while looking for a tutor to help my son, then midway through Year 10, whose progress in French seemed to have stalled completely. He lacked confidence speaking in class and was becoming increasingly worried about how he was going to cope with GCSE French.
Ben and I had an initial call to discuss the situation. I was immediately struck by the depth of his understanding of how languages are learned, his grasp of effective teaching methods, and, perhaps above all, his profound empathy.
My son began weekly lessons with him. What impressed me from the outset was that Ben had a plan. He helped put in place a manageable and sustainable structure of exposure to French: listening, reading, speaking and even games. It was something my son could realistically continue week after week.
Ben made no extravagant promises. He was very clear that progress would depend on consistent work outside lessons as well as the weekly online sessions with him. But little by little, the effect was striking. My son became more confident in French and, I believe, more confident generally.
There were still difficult moments. In February of Year 11, after my son’s mock exams, his school French teacher described his result as “an extremely poor performance” and said that she was “really very concerned”. Ben, however, understood where my son was in the process. He remained quietly confident that, if he stayed the course, things would begin to come together.
That confidence mattered enormously. Instead of panicking or abandoning what he was doing, my son trusted Ben and stuck with the process.
And things did come together.
In the end, my son achieved a Grade 9. He performed strongly across every element of the French GCSE and dropped only a handful of marks in each skill.
The result was remarkable, but what Ben gave him went well beyond the grade. He gave him a method, confidence and the belief that sustained, intelligent work really can transform what at first seems an impossible subject.Benjamin and I have known each other for about a decade now. I've always admired his masterful combination of a direct, matter-of-fact manner with an encouraging warmth and an evident personal mission to help his students thrive in life. I have no hesitation in Recommending Ben. What you see is what you get. In today's world, Ben's integrity of character is most refreshing.
I have no hesitation in recommending Ben Lucas as a tutor. He is a man of integrity and good character, who is conscientious and dedicated to helping children and young people learn. I have known him for several years and know that he has a successful track record of as a teacher and tutor.
Our son was tutored by Ben for the past three years in both French and Spanish. While we were not looking for any degree certifications, I am happy to report that our son is fluent in both languages, even though he no longer took them in school for his final two years. My wife and I can't recommend Ben highly enough. He clearly makes language enjoyable as confirmed by our son.
My son has started taking lessons from Ben for his sixth form admission prep, and we are already very happy with Ben's support. His suggestions teach my son to look at things from different perspectives, and my son has told me that he already feels that his writing has improved greatly.
A brilliant tutor. Inspiring, committed and someone you can rely on. Ben knows his subject and how to bring out the best in students. He is patient and innovative and is able to share insights that take students to that next level. He cares about education and about each student doing their best.
I’ve studied with Ben over the past three years, and I cannot imagine a more qualified and personable tutor.
Well-spoken and well-read, his range of knowledge seems almost inexhaustible and his love of learning is contagious.
Ben takes the time to understand your interests, needs, and goals. He creates lessons that are challenging and engaging, and his sense of humor makes them thoroughly enjoyable.
In the words of Charlotte Mason, “his is the part of guide, philosopher, and friend.” I’ve looked forward to every lesson—book one and you’ll see what I mean!Ben tutored our son for 3 years, first in French and then in both French and Spanish. The results were incredible, with our son so much more able to hold a conversation than when he was just studying a language in school. I can speak French so I can attest to the significant improvement in his ability. Ben is just an amazing tutor.
Always a great experience when we have used Ben at Artisan Tuition. The children always enjoy their time, and Ben is great at imparting the knowledge that they need. Clear communication and friendly. Highly recommended!
I contacted Benjamin after reading his profile on another tutoring site to help my daughter prepare for her 11 plus. After establishing a level of learning Benjamin set out a learning plan focused on my daughter's weaker areas, all with the aim to give greater knowledge and confidence to understand the structure of the 11 plus paper. Benjamin is always calming in his voice and in his lesson delivery, incorporating varied learning styles. My daughter has gone from being so nervous about private tuition to looking forward to Benjamin's next lesson, which just happens to be 2 hours long! Benjamin always gives feedback before leaving and will email targeted lessons to complete ready for his next visit and measure improvement. My daughter's confidence has improved so much, it's a delight to see. I recommend Benjamin to anyone looking for extra tuition.
Ben is an incredible tutor and I would highly recommend him, he is extremely patient and understanding and my daughter has gained confidence within a relatively short period of time. He has a very gentle and encouraging teaching style and clearly explains new concepts. We are feeling positive for our 11+ outcome.
Realizing your full potential is only possible with the right person in your corner. Benjamin is that person. He's come from six generations of teaching and has the credentials to back it up. Choosing Benjamin is one of the easiest and smartest decisions you can make.
I've gotten to know Ben over this past year, and it is evident that he is passionate about education. Not only is he passionate, but he's also extremely knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects, from history and economics to literature and media. I know this personally from the extended discussions we've had on all sorts of topics (often over a burger)! He's professional, friendly, and clearly loves what he does.
I’ve known Benjamin for over a decade as an approachable, knowledgeable and highly reliable person, and I would strongly recommend him as an Lnat tutor. He is patient and encouraging, explains concepts clearly, and takes the time to understand and adapt to each student’s individual needs. He is an engaging teacher and an excellent communicator who creates a supportive learning environment while helping students challenge themselves and improve. I have learned a great deal from Benjamin, and would have no hesitation recommending him to any Superprof members looking for an exceptional and experienced tutor!
I met Ben when studying my A-levels, during which he taught me history. Without hesitation, Ben was the tutor I felt closest to throughout my studies, which makes him stand out among all the teachers I have had through multiple schools and qualifications.
Foremost, Benjamin is a teacher who really values and emphasises the process of learning. He is deeply interested in it, which is very much felt during his lessons. To this I may add that he has a rare but important ability to read the room, both academically, in terms of how well I was grasping the topic, but also on a personal one. This ability to feel my academic progress was very important, as my circumstances placed me on a very tight schedule for mastering my course. The personal connection during the lessons, in combination with Ben's lively and engaging delivery of content, meant that a lesson with him never felt like a chore, but rather something I was often looking forward to. Specifically, it was an interesting challenge when turning in any writing or research I had done for discussions, as it always proved difficult, in an academically positive way, to fully defend my work for Ben, as he would find ways or approaches to push me to greater expertise on a topic. This made our time together extremely valuable, as our lessons never bogged down in a simple explanation of the topic, but instead into sophisticated deep-rooted and structural-level understanding even to the point of knowing why a topic is taught in a specific way.
I can therefore wholeheartedly endorse Benjamin to anyone who wishes for their lessons to feel like a passionate discussion with a friend, yet who still wishes to achieve the academic progress they desire, thanks to Ben's ability to gently yet appropriately push his students to great heights.Benjamin and I taught together several years ago, and we have stayed in touch to talk teaching. I worked as school director and his direct supervisor. I was impressed by the passion, dedication, adaptability, and knowledge he brought to his work. Benjamin's experience is broad, which helps him excel in unusual situations that might unsettle other teachers. He is especially good at winning skeptical young students over.
Benjamin is an excellent teacher, and I heartily recommend him.Ben truly cares about his students thriving. He is adept at crafting bespoke ways of learning depending upon each student. His knowledge and wisdom make our regular conversations always interesting and enjoyable.
I’d highly recommend his services.Benjamin is a very competent and effective teacher with a heart of compassion and genuine desire to uplift his students through learning
Benjamin has been a superb tutor for my 10-year-old son. He is a nurturing teacher, but one who pushes when necessary. Above all, he has a sincere and profound sense of vocation as an educator.
Ben has been tutoring my son, Areez, since December 2025, and we have been extremely pleased with his support. He has extensive knowledge of the Trafford 11+ GL exam, which was exactly what we were looking for, and his expertise has been clear from day one.
Areez thoroughly enjoys his lessons with Ben and finds them engaging and interesting. The feedback Ben provides after each session is detailed, thoughtful, and genuinely helpful. He is always available to discuss Areez’s progress, answer questions, and put our minds at ease.
Having attended Altrincham Grammar School himself — the very school my son hopes to join — Ben brings invaluable first‑hand insight into what the school expects and how best to prepare.
I would be more than happy to recommend Ben to anyone looking for a respectable, knowledgeable, and thorough tutor. We have been delighted with his support and will definitely be looking to use him for our daughter in the near future.
SalmaanI have known Benjamin for a long time (and we have shared names even longer!) and benefitted from his patient and expert tutoring, particularly in languages and critical thinking.
