About James
I am a musician, artist, writer and teacher. I teach composition, rap, singing, piano and trombone. Beginners is where my strength lies, as my versatility, enthusiasm and ability to break information down suits those just starting out. I followed both my parents' footsteps into a Music PGCE at UCL, the top teaching university in the world, and achieved one of the highest results possible. A while back I studied Music at the University of Manchester, where I achieved first class honours - with my highest mark being my study of Public Enemy, the first political rap group led by Chuck D in the 80s. It is this detail and passion that informs my teaching. Rap is and always should be full of joy, creativity and fun. Sure, it should also raise awareness of experiences in the world that aren't. But, there's a reason hip hop started from New York block parties. It brought oppressed people together. Dancing, partying, battling. Expressing themselves positively through colour, clothing and creativity. Who doesn't want a piece of that? Hip hop is a beautiful art form that's precious to me, and I can't wait to share that passion with you, too.

Poetry, rhythm and breathing. All are essential to learning to rap. All can be developed. My background is in a deep love for the culture of hip hop. A culture I studied at university, and a rap skill I developed in playful improvisation with friends. Rap is not all what you see in popular music. It can be a way of telling your story, building your confidence, hyping the party crowds, raising awareness and more. As well as developing breathing techniques I know from a life of singing, we will study the greatest lyricists like Rakim, write to the dopest beats like DJ Premier or J Dilla, and build the voice that the world needs to hear: yours. 1 hour at a time. In person or online. These lessons are a highlight of my week. I hope they'll soon become the same for you.
