About Melanie

As an educator, I believe it is important that personal beliefs about education be explored. This should be an ongoing and an evolving process. I agree that students learn best through real-world experiences which are meaningful to them. My personal experiences contribute to my philosophy today in that the most meaningful learning takes place when students are motivated and interested. It is my belief that the way to achieve this is by giving students a voice in the learning process, and by assisting them in finding connections in the curriculum with their own life and interests. By allowing students to bring their own stories, experiences, and ideas into the classroom, this provides the students with opportunities to work together, to learn from each other, and respect each other's differences. My philosophy has been shaped by experiences within my own life, education, and career in working with people. Each year as I teach in the profession of education, my philosophy evolves as I grow and gain experiences as a teacher in the classroom. However, the foundations of my educational philosophy will continue to guide me in the way which I interact with students and teach within my classroom. As an instructor for any course, I am actively involved in facilitating the learning process and students’ gaining knowledge of the concepts presented in the course. I have over 8 years of experience in effectively communicating in the Business World. I enjoy the educational process and encourage students to remain actively engaged throughout the course. Overall, the course is designed to be an interactive, enjoyable learning experience. I look forward to working with my students to complete a successful and enriching experience that we can encourage one another in.

My tutoring approach is student-centered, grounded in evidence-based instructional practices, and responsive to individual learner needs. I focus on clarity, engagement, and gradual release of responsibility. I incorporate the following strategies:

Diagnostic Teaching: I begin by assessing students' strengths and gaps to tailor each session. This may include formal assessments or quick checks for understanding.

Scaffolded Instruction: I use modeling (“I do”), guided practice (“We do”), and independent practice (“You do”) to gradually build student confidence and skill.

Active Learning: I encourage students to articulate their thinking through discussion, reflection, and writing, reinforcing retention and metacognition.

Feedback and Reflection: Each session includes actionable feedback and opportunities for students to reflect on their learning goals and progress.

A Typical Lesson Plan
Each lesson is designed to be efficient, engaging, and aligned with clear learning objectives. A typical 60-minute session might include:

Warm-Up (5–10 minutes)
A brief review or retrieval practice activity to activate prior knowledge.

Mini-Lesson (10–15 minutes)
Direct instruction or modeling of a key concept (e.g., literary analysis, grammar rule, writing strategy).

Guided Practice (15–20 minutes)
Students apply the skill or concept with support—reading a passage, writing a response, annotating text, or solving problems.

Independent Practice (10–15 minutes)
Students work on a targeted task independently while I monitor and provide feedback.

Wrap-Up and Feedback (5 minutes)
We reflect on what was learned, address lingering questions, and set a goal for next time.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
What distinguishes my tutoring is the blend of:

Instructional expertise (deep understanding of standards and effective pedagogy)

Cultural responsiveness (recognizing and incorporating students' backgrounds and identities into instruction)

Assessment literacy (using data to drive instruction and progress monitoring)

Communication (I build trust with students and families through clear, respectful, and consistent communication)

I don’t just help students complete assignments—I teach them how to think, plan, revise, and advocate for their learning.

Who the Lessons Are For
My tutoring is most effective for:

Middle and high school students (grades 6-collegiate) needing support in English Language Arts: reading comprehension, writing, literary analysis, grammar, or test prep.

Students preparing for assessments such as SAT/ACT English sections, state writing assessments, or AP Language and Literature.

Striving readers and writers, including multilingual learners and students with IEPs or 504 plans, who benefit from structured support and scaffolded literacy instruction.
