About Thomas

I recently graduated cum laude from Macalester College and am now living in New York City looking for work . As a young kid, I attended a private school in Manhattan called St. Bernards, and I had a really hard time keeping up with my academics because I have dyslexia. Most days after school, I would meet with phonics and homework tutors. Because of this, I have a deep appreciation for my old tutors because of all they did for me. In fact, I am getting dinner with an old tutor to catch up next week! This is all to say that I want to tutor because I know how influential a couple session a week can be for a kid. I am happy to provide any references that would attest to my character.
From a more academic standpoint, I attended three prestiges institutions all listed on my resume. These schools provided me with a strong foundation across the disciplines and strong advanced skills in the humanities.

About the lesson

Teaching three summers at the Brick Church Summer Steps program taught me to be patient and encouraging with students. I will tailor lessons to their specific needs and styles of learning. Being dyslexic, I understand every student learns differently, and it is the job of the tutor to adapt to the student. For instance, if the student has motivation issues, I would incentivize their learning by rewarding them if they complete their work properly. I am willing and capable to tutor young students struggling to learn the basics of academia to advanced high school and college students struggling to hone their advanced writing skills. This experience will be useful for me as I am trying to become a professional writer, so working with kids struggling to master the basics of disciplines such as writing will in turn help me bolster my fundamental skills.
