About Xavier
My biggest strength is that I understand how important it is to know both the details and the bigger picture. My chemistry coursework and laboratory research at UNC Chapel Hill taught me to approach problems carefully, follow procedures, analyze results, and understand why things happen instead of simply accepting an answer. I try to make complicated topics feel manageable by explaining them in different ways when necessary. I also believe students should feel comfortable asking questions and admitting when they do not understand something. There is no benefit to rushing through material if the student has not actually learned it.

My approach to tutoring is to make sure students actually understand what they’re learning instead of just memorizing answers. As a Chemistry graduate from UNC Chapel Hill with an Associate’s degree in Science from Sandhills Community College, I know science can get confusing when a lot of concepts start coming together. I like to break things down step by step, explain why something works, and go through practice problems until the student feels comfortable doing them on their own. I was hired by the tutoring center at Sandhills Community College and tutored briefly, which gave me some experience helping someone work through their coursework. During a lesson, I would first figure out what the student is struggling with, where in class they got lost, review the important concepts, work through examples together, and then let them try problems independently so we can see what they understand. My research experience at UNC has also helped me develop my problem-solving skills and attention to detail. I’m best suited to helping middle school, high school, and introductory college students with chemistry, biology, and general science. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, learn from their mistakes, and leave knowing how to approach problems themselves instead of just remembering the answer.
