About Arseniy
Hi! I’m Arseniy, an IB graduate who studied English Literature, History, and Global Politics as my Higher Levels, achieving a total score of 41 points. I am currently studying Philosophy in UCL. In the 2 years I had spent on the IB programme, I have familiarised myself with what the IB want to see, and what they value in essay writing and analysis. With a subject as non-prescribed as English Literature, I realized the only two things that truly matter are
1.Essay Writing;
2. In-depth knowledge of texts.
While, of course, it is easier said than done, truly, once I started focusing on those two aspects of the subject, my performance increased drastically. Now, I aim to aid students who are struggling to get their head around Paper 1 technique, or simply need some help in the Individual Oral, however, ultimately, my goal is for each student to have a “breakthrough moment” in the subject as early as possible, which is something I wish I had when I was starting the IB.

English Literature in the International Baccalaureate is a complex course with a variety of elements that need to be mastered in order to achieve a top grade. However, luckily, an incredibly large proportion of the final grade for English Literature in the IB is determined by in-depth knowledge, thorough understanding, and creative engagement with the text chosen by your teacher. Therefore, a strong focus on studied literary works is a particularly effective way to improve performance in the subject, and is the focal point in my teaching for that reason. However, without a doubt, the importance of analysis of unseen work, though only exclusive to Paper 1, is not to be understated. For this reason, depending on the needs and and strengths of the student, Paper 1 examples and questions must be examined and practiced regularly, in that way, the technique of the exam becomes second-nature. With each student, I aim to strike a balance between essay practice and in-depth studying of the texts which will, of course, be different for each student. Due to the open nature of the curriculum, with the IB rarely, if ever, intervening with the chosen texts of the faculty in the many individual schools that teach IB English Literature. Therefore, there is an almost certain probability that I would not have read, or even heard of, some of the texts taught to students around the world. However, as part of my lesson preparation, I will always familiarize myself with the material and texts the student is studying, to make sure I am able to provide commentary on the text and aid with in-depth analysis and understanding of the texts.
