About Jim

I am a certified teacher with decades of experience. I specialize in high school English, Social Studies and Literacy tutoring with proven success rates. I have been a classroom teacher, private high school principal, and administrator. I currently consult to government, industry, Indigenous groups and sports organizations. I founded a groundbreaking literacy learning program for remote areas and established an award-winning youth centre in Red Deer. I have authored curriculum and test materials as a consultant and entrepreneur.

My teaching methods are both traditional and progressive with a holistic approach to learning. I have authored research papers on innovative teaching methodologies for Indigenous communities and for communities seeking an outreach approach. A typical class would be a mix of traditional and cutting edge approaches using textbooks, appropriate technology and structured environments that build learner confidence. If the lesson is more didactic, I limit the daily student "take away" to three key concepts or generalizations. It is understood that if more help is needed homework is assigned and checked the next day.
As an assistant superintendent, I developed a curriculum tailored to the needs of outreach and marginalized students. As a traditional classroom teacher, my approach is more structured and often deadline-driven.
I am currently authoring a series of locally developed courses for Alberta Education that are student-centred, holistic and relevant to the future.
