About Thomas
Relaxed and confident, with many years of experience teaching students of diverse backgrounds, I inspire a desire for learning by getting students to interrogate the cultural significance of their lessons and study materials. I do this by engaging their natural curiosity via encouraging life experience comparisons to their subject matter and its relevant information. I want my students to understand that their learning has real world applications and implications, both academic and personal. I make assignments challenging, fun and functional, geared toward students gaining a sense of accomplishment that is academically appropriate, mentally fulfilling and confidence building.

Teaching will be done online, using a platform convenient to both student and teacher. Close reading of texts, discussion and responses to selected works, critical analysis of writing, the author's rhetorical approach and its cultural significance will constitute much of the study content. Students will respond to various study questions and write essay responses to analytical assignments. A typical assignment would be to write an essay about how a writer has dealt with controversial subject, how the text aligns with the social expectations of the time, and what the student may think about the work's cultural significance. High school and college students will benefit from a conversational approach to assignments that emphasizes their personal engagement with the material.
