I earned two associates degrees, three bachelor's degrees and a master's degree. I would have gone for a PhD if the commute wasnt 2.5 hours away. When teaching a full course I start from the very beginning with math review since general chemistry is based on math. If tutoring I first get details regarding the topic in which the student is needing help. I often, if needed, make a pretest to determine what background the student has or is missing.This can be done on their own time and then emailed to me. I get a copy of the book the student is using and I own over 100 chemistry texts that I reference and from which I get example problems. I prepare notes and practice sheets. I go through examples with the student and then ask the student to do examples for me to evaluate the progress. I also have notes on line for further reading. In three years teaching at one high school, my students in introductory chem scored the highest in the county for the three years in which I taught the course. When teaching at the university I coordinated the lecture and lab since I also wrote the lab experiments. I know that labs are often disconnected from lectures and students often dont see the connection. I dont proceed without the student understanding what we had covered. I also show the necessity of reading the text and outlining, while writing down questions for each paragraph read, then being able to answer those questions.
