About Lori
I've been working as a freelance editor, writing tutor, and translator (German to English) for 24 years. Additionally, I have 15 years of experience teaching at the following institutions: Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff, AZ, USA), The University of Wisconsin-Madison (Madison, WI, USA), The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI, USA), and Denison University (Granville, Ohio, USA). My freelance clients and my classroom students have been consistently successful in meeting their academic and professional goals, from getting higher grades to improving their pronunciation of individual sounds of the English language to graduating with honors, getting accepted to graduate school, and publishing articles in respected academic journals! Over the course of fifteen years, I've taught the following subjects: +beginner-level German +English as a Second Language (all levels) +academic writing for native and nonnative speakers of English +academic oral communication for nonnative speakers of English +grammar and style for native and nonnative speakers of English +pedagogy courses that help teachers work effectively with students who are not native speakers of the classroom language. I hold degrees from the following universities: +The University of Wisconsin-Madison - PhD in ESL Teacher Education and MA in German Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition +Northern Arizona University - Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language +Kansas State University - BA in Modern Languages with an emphasis on German Literature I retired from classroom instruction a few years ago so that I could focus on my own creative writing as well as offer my tutoring services to a broader audience of traditional and non-traditional students --- including you!

2) I'll have opportunities to learn about your interests, goals, dreams, strengths, weaknesses, and learning needs. This knowledge will help me decide which teaching strategies are likely to work best for you. Meanwhile, you can rest assured that I have or will ask for the information I need to make instruction comprehensible, relevant, and engaging.
3) You and I will enjoy a sense of respect for one another. This mutual sense of respect gives you the freedom to experiment and to make mistakes without worrying about trying to impress me. A mutually respectful relationship also makes it easier for me to say one of the most important things a good teacher can say: "I can't answer that question; let's discover the answer together!"
Because I want to establish a respectful relationship with you, I will spend our first tutoring session getting to know who you are, what your dreams are, and how I can help you achieve them. At this session, we'll also set goals together and draw up a schedule of times to meet.
Typical goals for writing instruction include the following:

+develop strategies for identifying the strengths and weaknesses in your own writing
+discover how the reading that you do can help you become a better writer
+continue developing your knowledge of and skill in using English grammar, vocabulary, and style
Subsequent sessions will include plenty of opportunities for you to ask questions, make suggestions, or let me know about any happenings in your life that may affect your learning or your work.
