About Rick
- What kind of experience do you have? As well as a long business career, my tutoring career has involved hundreds of hours 1-1 experience with business pupils ranging from those aspiring for excellence such as A grade GCSE or A Level, to struggling pupils aiming lower, to those with specific problems such as dyslexia. I take special care to "teach to the test" with very detailed up to date syllabus knowledge, and coaching is given in exam techniques and help for e.g. Mock exams. In my business career with BP and Seacontainers I spent many years training individuals or groups in business numeracy topics such as finance, statistics, data handling and presentation, graphs and IT. The areas I worked in were Production Operations, Retail consultancy, Finance, Chemicals, Refining, HR, Project Management and Distribution so I have direct work experience in almost all the Business syllabus topics. I have combined some of these skills with carefully researched academic syllabus knowledge to create around 50 specific lesson plan presentations across Business topics like Marketing, Financial Ratios and Strategy in the AQA and Edexcel programmes, each covering detailed definitions, methods, tips, exam style worked examples and closing plenary. I run through these on screen and issue handouts. The specific homework I set covers both written past paper examples and web sites such as BBC Bitesize. I tutor at my home and also by Skype to e.g Brussels and China. I am also a school governor, provide Oxbridge entrant interview practice, write an educational blog on my website which I run with my wife Alison and tutor my children (when they let me!). I am also a qualified examiner have marked hundreds of GCSE scripts. Finally, I get to know a pupil's hobbies such as sport and music and try to build worked examples around those to keep things fun! - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? Yes I do - Where and with whom did you train? During a long career with BP I undertook many "train the trainer" coaching sessions and coached around 1000 people in 20 countries in Europe Asia and America in business numeracy. Much of this feeds very easily into the Maths, Science and Business syllabuses that I teach, having researched in great detail the new 9-1 GCSE programmes. - Do you belong to any professional organisations? Prince 2 Project Managers - Tell me about some of your current students. Across Maths, Science and Business some of my pupils have been with me for several years while some have a very specific short term requirement like recently marking and reviewing some mock Business Studies A Level papers. I am currently teaching the following variety of pupils: several very bright young Chinese and South East Asian background pupils aspiring for local Independent/Grammar schools such as Tiffin and Hampton; several KS3 pupils who need a little help in Maths and Science; and several year 10 or 11 pupils at both local State and Private schools aiming to turn lower to medium grades or medium to higher at GCSE. I am also coaching some resits. Some of my pupils have mild dyslexia and I take care to understand their needs. Some of my pupils like sports like football and music like rock and I generally introduce those to the material I teach to lighten the lesson e.g. with a Physics of Soccer case study. Many of my pupils come from word of mouth recommendations from previous tuition parents I am also helping a Chinese student who studies at the Wycombe High School in China and who hope to come to UK to study. I am tutoring a pupil hoping to qualify for Cambridge University Natural Science.

I am a Cambridge graduate and Master of Business Administration who combines direct business experience with current syllabus expertise. I also tutor Maths and Science having also used those extensively in my business roles. I agree a programme with parents and broadly arrange my lessons to coincide with the order of school curriculum and provide coaching for specific tests, mocks and exams including A-Level and GCSE. I set very targeted homework, followed by an email feedback after every lesson. I use a mixture of interactive on-screen slides I have created myself for every aspect of the business syllabus, plus short internet videos and tests, and real past paper questions with worked answers. I mix conventional theory with syllabus-related examples from the real world of business, often current hot topics like a merger, an interest rate change and even Brexit! I take great care to understand and explain the mark schemes because this can add grade potential over and above pure topic knowledge. - Which subject(s) do you teach? I teach Business Studies at GCSE and A-Level aided by real life business experience. I also teach Economics at A-Level. Maths is another speciality and of course this helps with financial calculations in business. I also teach Science namely Chemistry Physics and Biology, I also coach Cambridge Natural Science and Oxford PAT entrance exam and interview, and train the QTS professional skills exam for teachers. - Tell me about your qualifications. I got perfect A1 A1 A results for A and S Level in Maths Physics and Chemistry from Newcastle Royal Grammar School then I graduated from Cambridge University with a 2.1 in Natural Sciences. I secured a Master of Business Administration from Humberside Business School and then qualified in Prince 2 Project Management. - How much do you charge? I charge a flat rate of £40 from summer - Where do you teach? I teach at my home in Strawberry Hill, Twickenham and pupils also come from nearby areas such as Richmond, Kingston and Teddington in SW London, Middlesex. I also Zoom abroad to places like China and Brussels - When are you available? Mainly Monday to Friday mid afternoon to early evening, but also mornings on request for on-line foreign location. . - Which ages and levels do you teach? For Business KS4 GCSE age 14-16 all the way to age 18 for A :Level. For Maths and Science also age 8-13. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? For Business, GCSE, i GCSE, AS and A Level. For A Level also Economics. - Describe your arrangements for online tutoring. I use Classin, Skype and Zoom to run screen share using my bespoke presentations in countries like China and Belgium - Do you have a personal message for students? A golfer called Gary Player said famously "the more I practice the luckier I seem to get". The same can apply with GCSEs and A Levels exams, the more you understand the methods and practice past paper questions, the more likely it is that when you open that exam paper and think, "well that's a stroke of luck, I think I have seen almost that very same question before and I know how to do it ! ". In our lessons and homework we'll have some fun but very seriously teach to the test you are doing and I'll help you especially if you can tell me what you are doing at school. You can gain marks in three ways, first by knowing theory but also applying common sense exam techniques and finally practising past papers and knowing what the examiners award high marks for. In Business the art of constructing the "long answer" is vital and I'll develop those techniques with you. I will also alert you to any stories e.g . on BBC Business website which are especially relevant.
