About Tom
My name is Tom C, and I'm a professional actor. But before I started acting, I very nearly became a Geometry teacher. I graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Kenyon College with a minor in Mathematics and a major in Drama. Two very different subjects. This dichotomy has been a part of my life since I was a young boy.

When I was a student, I realized I learned nothing from a class I wasn't passionate about. To improve my grades, I would actively seek out the fascinating and remarkable aspects of any lesson: I'd search for the story behind the discovery of a mathematical equation, try to recreate famous historical speeches, and watch movies and listen to music in the language I was studying. Looking back on it, I’ve realized I was looking for narrative that would enchant my imagination and ignite my curiosity.
I teach from both a left brain and right brain perspective. I believe combining rote methods and Socratic inquiry with hands on experience and imaginative practical application produces the best results in my students. Because of the duality of my background, I can approach a topic from a fact-based perspective or by guiding students through a series of intuitive leaps of thinking that lead them naturally to the answers. I love asking questions, and encourage my students to never stop asking. And then I encourage them to not be satisfied with easily found, pat answers. Many years of teaching children the basics of theater and improvisation have given me adventurous, on-your-feet ways of bringing a student to the heart of a topic.
The subjects I am available to tutor in are K-12 math, including geometry, trig, and calculus. I also provide acting lessons for students looking to audition for performing arts high schools, colleges, or graduate schools.
