About Mr
Hi, my name is Tom.
I have completed my Post Graduate Degree in Education, specializing in Biology. Since then, I have been teaching for 5 years and have taught students of all abilities in both the UK and Australia. I am a member of Queensland College of Teachers and have been teaching in Queensland for the past 1.5 years.
During my 5 years have worked with students from all backgrounds and abilities, from students with special educational needs, to year 12 Biology students.
Throughout my career I have learned to work on student progress, not grades. I believe that the first priority is that students realize that they are capable of succeeding academically. Once this is achieved, the grade comes all on its own.
My job as your tutor is to give you the tools you need to learn and grow at an individual level. I focus on developing your cognitive skills, such as describing, explaining and evaluating information from a scientific context. These transferable skills go across subjects and fit into the real world of work.

In general, students will be given a pre-test to ascertain where they are currently. Lessons will consist of a retrieval task to assist long term memory. Lessons will be chunked into sections of content delivery, knowledge application tasks and formative feedback. This helps students practice, get feedback on progress and identify gaps/misconceptions.
Lessons are typically 1 hour in length. However, if students need longer sessions then we can discuss this.
I have been teaching for 5 years, I taught in the UK for 3.5 years and have been teaching in Queensland for the past 1.5 years. I have experience teaching and designing curriculums from years 7-12 in science subjects aligned with the Queensland Curriculum achievement standards. I have experience teaching year 11 and 12 students, science in practice and biology aligned to the QCAA standards.
As I have worked in multiple countries and local areas, I have experience teaching students from a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities. My teaching goals are not simply about student attainment but progress for the individual.
