About Ben
I'm a self-taught guitarist with over 8 years of experience. When I first learned guitar, I struggled a lot with professional lessons. The exercises were boring and repetitive and I couldn't see the connection between what I was learning and what I wanted to play. I just wanted to play the music I loved. Eventually, I gave up, and it wasn't until about 5 years later that I decided to try again. The second time around, I taught myself, and I chose to ignore all the exercises and just focus on learning songs I liked. This made it fun for me, as I was hearing myself play more of what I wanted to play, even if it was a bit sloppy. Once I was able to play songs I knew, I started to notice some of the technical errors I was making - only then did I find it valuable to practice exercises to hone my technique. And I only practiced the things I needed to work on most for whatever song I was learning. I was more tapped in that way: the exercises no longer felt like meaningless work. This approach worked well for me. Within 2-3 years, I was playing complex finger-style arrangements that seemed impossible when I first started, and improvising jam sessions with experienced band members. I aim to help my students achieve similar results - if we remain focused on your specific goals as a musician, we can achieve rapid growth in whatever direction you'd like.

My approach to guitar lessons is hands-on. From day one, students will be able to practice the basics with real-time feedback, learning each new concept at their own pace. First, I will be asking questions to get an idea of what your goals are with the guitar. Based on that, we can create a lesson plan that reflects your specific needs as a musician, to ensure that you get the most value out of each lesson. For example, say your goal is just to learn a certain song - your lessons will include everything you need to know to play that song, and we won't spend as much time on theory if it doesn't pertain to your goal . Say your goal is to improvise - in that case we would probably explore a bit of theory regarding harmony and scales, and then we would practice using backing tracks or improvising together. What sets me apart as a teacher is that I'm not interested in forcing you to learn anything you don't want/need to know. I believe that any student can be successful with or without theory, it all depends on what you're looking to do. Whatever you're looking to do, we can get started right away, and I'll bet you can reach your goals faster than you think. That's how I taught myself guitar. I knew what I wanted to do and I jumped right in. I believe that's the best way to learn. These lessons are for beginners looking to grow their skills quickly and have fun while doing it.
