About Carlyn
I’m a trained teacher with over 10 years of teaching experience, including seven years teaching in secondary schools in Singapore. My approach comes from years of working with students, and not simply from having been a strong student myself.
I’ve taught students across different abilities, from those aiming for top grades to those who need more support and confidence.

With over nine years of tutoring international school students, I have taught a range of syllabuses. My lessons are adapted to the student rather than following a fixed formula. If a student struggles with writing, we identify what is holding them back and whether it is developing ideas, structuring an argument, or expressing themselves clearly. We work on those specific skills.
For English and Literature, I want students to move beyond simply identifying themes or memorising model answers. We explore how texts can be interpreted in different ways, how to build a convincing argument, and how to express ideas with precision and confidence. For exam preparation, I also teach students how to apply these skills to the specific demands of their syllabus and examination format.
In an age where AI makes shortcuts increasingly tempting, I place particular emphasis on independent thinking and helping students develop the confidence to express ideas in their own words.
All lessons are conducted online via Zoom.

Ms Booi was my daughter, Cahaya’s English tutor from January 2024 to December 2024. She was in year 10 and struggling with IGCSE English. Ms Booi started by assessing my daughters’ strengths and weaknesses. Comprehension was my daughter’s biggest challenge as she didn't like to read at the time. Ms Booi recommended reading materials that were aligned with Cahaya’s
interests and incorporated these into Booi’s lessons. The rest of the class - Ms Booi conducted targeted practice and throughout the year, Cahaya’s results improved from C to a B+ at the end of the year.My daughter was having difficulty grasping the deeper meaning of Purple Hibiscus for her EdExcel English Literature class. The cultural context felt very far removed, and she initially missed some of the more subtle aspects of the novel. Miss Booi worked patiently with her, going through the text chapter by chapter and helping her reflect on the themes by connecting them to her own experiences.
She also learned how to structure her essays more clearly and support her points with relevant and detailed examples. This was something she really struggled with before due to the complexity of the text. Her confidence grew and her exam results reflected that. Ms Booi tutored my daughter from January 2024 to November 2024.
