About Melisa
My name is Melisa Preston. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership, as well as a teaching certificate in the state of Arizona. During my teaching career I have taught kindergarten, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and 7th grade. I have loved teaching all ages of students, there are special things about every season of growing up.
While I was in my most recent teaching position as middle school math teacher, my students scored the highest in the district on the state standardized test and on the District formative assessments. In addition, my students also had the highest percentage of growth. Because of this, I was promoted to an Instructional Coach position in 2020 and promoted again, in 2021, as an Acceleration Specialist.
As a student, I struggled a lot in school. I especially struggled with math, until my fourth grade teacher took the time to sit with me and find my repeated misconceptions. Within only a few short weeks, my understanding of the math content significantly improved. Up until that point, I did not ever have a teacher take the time to work with me one-on-one. This lead to my passion to do the same thing for struggling students as that special teacher did for me. I LOVE my career, it is my way of making a difference in children's lives.
The most valuable thing I have learned during my career is the value of relationships. Without relationships, students do not achieve and excel to their full potential. In order for students to achieve great gains in their academics, they need to have a teacher who believes in them. Kids need to know they can trust their teacher to be a mentor, with this trust, students build self-confidence and develop a positive attitude towards learning.
In addition to working as an educator, I am also a wife and a mother. I have been married to my husband for 16 years and we have 4 beautiful kids together. My children range from 8 years old all the way up to 19 years old. Being a mom and wife is one of my greatest honors. I enjoy camping, hiking, and hanging out with family and friends.

I design my lessons to constantly engage my students. I value the positive impact of math discourse, strategy differentiation, and the importance of immediate feedback. I base my instruction design on the "Learning Pyramid" which emphasizes the importance of students practicing and problem solving to successfully retain information.
I have spent the last 2 years of my teaching career specializing as an Acceleration Specialist. My role focuses on excelling student learning by using a tiered intervention system of instruction. I am eager to put this concept into practice with the students I have the honor of tutoring.
I specialize in tutoring K-5th grade students in all subject areas. My expertise with students in Middle School focuses on Reading, Writing, and Math. I am excited to become your partner and guide in discovering your true potential. I have a firm belief that EVERY child can learn, NO exceptions. I am also passionate and specialize in working with students who have learning disabilities, social/emotional disabilities, and students who are identified as falling on the Autism spectrum.
